Sometimes referred to as Pseudo-Longinus because his real name is unknown, Longinus was a Greek teacher of rhetoric or a literary critic who may have lived in the 1st or 3rd century AD. Longinus is known only for this one work, which is both a treatise on aesthetics and a work of literary criticism. It is written in an epistolary form and the final part, possibly dealing with public speaking, has been lost. On the Sublime is a compendium of literary exemplars, with about 50 authors spanning 1,000 years mentioned or quoted. Along with the expected examples from Homer and other figures of Greek culture, Longinus refers to a passage from Genesis, which is quite unusual for the 1st century. The Italian translator, Antonio Francesco Gori (1691-1757) was a Florentine antiquarian, a priest in minor orders, provost of the Baptistery of San Giovanni from 1746 and a professor at the Liceo, whose numerous publications of ancient Roman sculpture and antiquities formed part of the repertory on which eighteenth century scholarship as well as the artistic movement of neoclassicism were based.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating mystery surrounding the origins and authorship of the renowned classical treatise, "On the Sublime." The author meticulously examines historical and textual clues to unravel the enigma of the work's attribution, questioning the long-held belief that it was written by Cassius Longinus, a figure associated with the ancient city of Palmyra. By exploring the literary landscape of the late Roman Empire and the intellectual currents of the time, the author sheds light on the critical discourse that shaped aesthetic ideals and influenced writers for centuries. The book challenges conventional assumptions about the treatise's historical context, proposing an alternative timeframe for its composition that aligns with the stylistic features and philosophical outlook evident in the text. Through a careful analysis of the treatise's content and its engagement with the works of Homer, Plato, and other literary giants, the book illuminates the profound insights it offers into the nature of sublimity in writing. The author elucidates the treatise's enduring relevance, demonstrating how its exploration of language, emotion, and the power of artistic expression continues to resonate with readers and inspire creative endeavors. Ultimately, the book's exploration of "On the Sublime" transcends a mere quest for authorship, offering a deeper understanding of how this timeless work has shaped our perception of literary excellence and continues to provide invaluable guidance for aspiring writers and discerning readers alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
