Chevreul, der umfassende Talente besaß und 1824 zum Direktor der berühmten Gobelin-Teppichmanufaktur ernannt wurde. Hier konzentrierte sich Chevreul auf die Probleme der Färberei und damit auf Farben, und 1839 erscheint sein umfassender Versuch, ihrer Ästhetik eine systematische Grundlage zu geben. Er trägt den Titel 'De la loi contrast simultane des couleurs' und handelt vom sogenannten Simultankontrast der Farben, für den Chevreul zwei Gesetze formuliert: 'Sieht das Auge gleichzeitig zwei benachbarte Farben, so werden diese von ihrer optischen Zusammensetzung ebenso wie von ihrem Farbtonwert verschieden erscheinen.' Und: 'In der Harmonie des Kontrastes ist die komplementäre Zusammensetzung allen anderen überlegen.' Mit seinem Werk über den Simultankontrast beeinflusste Chevreul die Richtungen der Kunst, die als Impressionismus, Neoimpressionismus und Orphischer Kubismus bezeichnet werden, wobei es vor allem Robert Delaunay ist, der farbige 'Simultanscheiben' bildnerisch verwendet. Obwohl sein Werk für die Praxis wenig tauglich bleibt und nie abgeschlossen wird, wirkt Chevreul auch auf die Ansichten ein, die Eugène Delacroix und Georges Seurat zu den Farben und der Art haben, wie sie mit ihnen umgehen" (Silvestrini, Farbsysteme). - Erstes und letztes Blatt gebräunt.
