From the blurb: "The early history of lithography has been neglected by English writers on printing and the graphic arts, and those who have considered the subject have tended to concentrate on the work of the better-known artists, most of whom turned to lithography as a side-line. Thi…s detailed and scholarly book deals with the work of the professional lithographic draughtsmen of the first half of the nineteenth century in England and France and the methods of working on stone which were devised to suit their needs. The author discusses the accounts of the process which appeared in contemporary journals and in the earliest technical handbooks on lithography, and goes on to describe in detail the techniques of drawing on stone developed during the finest period of the professional lithographic draughtsman between 1820 and 1850. He pays special attention to the writings of Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography, and to the contributions of Charles Hullmandel and Godefroy Engelmann, the two leading lithographic printers in England and France during the third and fourth decades of the nineteenth century. Amongst the methods described are the techniques of chalk and ink drawing on stone, engraving on stone, dessin a la pointe, lavis lithographique, manière noire, tinted lithography, and lithotint. Is the final section of the book the author traces the development in England and France of one branch of lithography, the making of topographical and landscape prints, and shows how the techniques described in the handbooks on lithography were put into practice by draughtsmen such as Haghe, Harding, Nicholson, Prout, and Westall in England, and Bonington, Ciceri, Dauzats, Huet, and Isabey in France. As a background to the subject the author provides an account of the invention of lithography and its development during the first twenty years of the nineteenth century in Germany, England, and France.
