A "75%" set of very portable adventures of Don Quixote, worthy of repair. Each volume includes two illustrations at title page. Would make a handsome addition to any bookshelf with floral gilt spine titles still glowing. Well-loved copies in good to general (acceptable) condition and deserving of repair, with sturdy binding and strong illustrations; all copies show edgewear, age browning and bumping to corners, as well as noticeable vertical scratches to boards ( front boards of Vol I and IV and rear boards of Vol III). Front board of Vol I is detaching, and some early pages have small stain to middle of fore edge and pencil notes on rear pastedown; Vol III is quite tight with partly loose front endpaper and the slightest foxing to outer edges of leaves but is very readable and bright otherwise; Vol IV shows gaps in leather at hinge of spine both front and back, occasional spots on edges but else tight and clean.

The translator's name was famously misprinted as 'Jarvis', meaning his translation of the classic story, which was still being printed over 200 years after the initial publication, is still referred to as the 'Jarvis edition'. Missing one leaf in Volume I which contained the direction to the printer for the placement of the prints, missing one illustration; cxlvi, 372; x, 412; xvi, 392; xi, 440 [viii], 7 page publisher's catalogue at the rear. Bound in half red leather with marbled-papered-covered boards, marbled-paper endpapers. Octavo. Wear to leather particularly at hinges, slight splitting at top, corners bumped, wear to boards, occasional tears to some margins, not affecting text, lightly foxed, former owner's signature in neat blue ink to ffeps, a couple of marks to pages but generally clean and bright with clear text, bindings firm and square.

Second edition with these illustrations by Issac Robert Cruikshank (misspelt Cruickshank on the engraved title pages). Two volumes. Publisher's original red-brown cloth with printed paper title labels to the spines. Page edges uncut. Complete with the half titles present in each volume. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece to volume one, additional engraved title pages to each volume and 25 full-page woodcut plates by Cruikshank. A very good set, the bindings square and firm with bumping to the corners and a couple of minor splits to the heads of the spines. The contents with a little cracking to the rear hinge of volume two, the engraved portrait frontispiece with a diagonal crease, a little raggedness to the edges and some spotting, light scattered foxing to the preliminary pages, and a neat contemporary previous owner's inscription to the title pages ("J: Waites - St: Johns Coll:-") are otherwise in very good order. A charming, unsophisticated set, uncommon thus. A nicely illustrated edition of Cervantes' classic work, often labelled as the first modern novel, first issued in this form in 1824 by Knight and Lacy of London. Like his father and more famous brother George (to which the present work is often misattributed), Issac Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856) was a pioneer in the history of comic illustration. Bound here in modern 1/4 calf over marbled boards. The first edition of this translation by Jervas, here with the scarce 8-page "Supplement to the Translator's Preface" inserted between pages xxiv and xxv (not found in all copies; some call this a second issue-point). A handsome edition, presented in a large quarto format with finely engraved plates. The translation was by Charles Jervas, whose name was consistently misspelled on editions of his translation as "Jarvis." ESTC T59882. The portrait of Cervantes by G. Kent, engraved by George Vertue, is opposite to the first page of the 90-page "Life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra", dated 1738 in Volume I. Condition: Bindings excellent with a few very light scratches. Very few instances of light foxing or soiling, some light offsetting from plates, clean text and illustrations with almost no spotting, a nice example overall.

An attractive example of the first edition of this esteemed translation. Jervas (1675-1739), consistently misspelled on editions of his translation as 'Jarvis', was a portrait painter and translator. "Jervas entered the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, setting up his home and studio in London in Cleveland Court, Westminster. He was hailed by Richard Steele in The Tatler of 16 April 1709 a 'the last great painter Italy has sent to us'. As well as literary friends, Jervas also had an influential patron in the prime minister Sir Robert Walpole. Jervas played an important role in acquiring works of art for Walpole's ever expanding collection, as well as contributing his own portraits. His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" ODNB.
