Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Contemporary half calf, 12mo; with hand-colored etched folding frontis., and 24 etched (uncolored) plates, all piece by George Woodward after Thomas Rowlandson. Some offsetting from the frontispiece, otherwise a bright, clean copy throughout. Upper joint just cracking; a little rubbing along edges of boards. A collaborative physiognomical romp, with the designs attributed to Woodward and the engravings to Rowlandson. As for the text, according to Grego, "George Stevens was a very indifferent actor, but a man of humorous parts, and in himself was considered, by his contemporaries, most entertaining company. The idea of a lecture was given him by a country carpenter, who made the character-blocks which formed the subjects of illustration. It proved an extraordinary success in the hands of its originator. After he retired, more than one actor attempted it, with poor results. Lewes [grandfather of George Henry Lewes, George Eliot's partner] was the most successful of Stevens' imitators." Includes a drunken head, a crying philosopher, and old bachelor, and more.

Añadir al carritoLeather. 96p. RARE 1808 EDITION IN DELUXE LEATHER BINDING. A small hardcover book beautifully bound in full red leather with ornate gilt decorations on the boards and spine. Features gilt dentelles, gilt foredges, and green silk endpapers. Very good condition for its age! The edges of the spine are a bit chafed, but the gilt detailing is still shiny and vivid. The foldout frontis is foxed and edgeworn, with some tiny holes in the bottom edge and the folds neatly reinforced with tape on the reverse side. The plates, including the frotnis, have faded slightly onto the facing pages. Occasional tiny blemishes, but otherwise, text easily legible and binding secure. Stevens' best-known work, a satire on physiognomy. This is the first printing with illustrations by Thomas Rowlandson, the Georgian caricaturist (1757-1827). Features 24 black and white plates and a folding frontispiece in color, all by Rowlandson. Measures approx. 6.4" x 4".
