Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Author: Masefield, John Title: Land Workers Publication Details: London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1942 Physical Description: Soft cover (pamphlet). 12 pages. Condition: Good. Description A scarce wartime pamphlet by John Masefield, Poet Laureate, published in 1942 at the height of the Second World War. This short work reflects on the role, dignity, and national importance of land workers during a period of agricultural mobilisation and food insecurity. The booklet is in good condition, with clean, complete pages and a sound, intact binding. The soft covers show light wear consistent with age and wartime paper quality, but there are no major defects. A well-preserved example of an ephemeral publication that was never intended for long-term survival. …

8° (19 x 12.5 cm). 2 Bll. (half title and title), 12 SS. Typographisch grosszügiger u. transparenter Schriftsatz in 7-Punkt Antiqua. OBrosch. (marginal schwach stockfleckig, Klammerheftung etwas angerostet / few weak foxings on margins, staples somewhat rusty). Erste (Original-) Ausgabe / First (original) edition. Seiten unterschiedlich blass stockfleckig (generell wenig sichtbar und kaum störend) / pages differently with very pale foxings. Leichte Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, Widmung d. Autors a. Vortitel u. montierte Grusskarte a. Vorsatz. Gesamthaft recht gutes Exemplar: Widmungsexemplar / Some light traces of age and use; Author's dedication on half title dat. Christmas 1942, and, on front cover verso mounted business card with four lines of good wishes. Over all a good and quite interesting copy. - - 'First published 1942' (title page verso) - Personal dedication on half title 'For Alice from Jan, Christmas 1942'; handwritten text in black ink on bluish business card with printed address 'Burcote Brook, Abingdon' : 'My dear Alice, Please let me wish you all happineß at this time + in the coming year. Always gratefully yours, Jan' - The uncommon short name used here seems to be rather intimate and points on a friendly relationship. Indeed, 'Jan' was his nickname: "Jan (as he was known to his wife)" (see: The War Artists: An Overview of Imperial War Museum, in: battlelines-redrawn.co uk) - Burcote Brook, Abingdon, was Masefield's home address (cf. archives.nypl org) - This booklet must have been sent to someone outside the poet's own family : "When Masefield was 23, he met his future wife, Constance de la Cherois Crommelin, who was 35 and of Huguenot decent. Educated in classics and English Literature, and a mathematics teacher, Constance was a good match for Masefield despite the difference in age. The couple had two children (Judith, born in 1904, and Lewis, in 1910)" (poemhunter com). Wahrscheinlich u. plausibel wäre die schottische Dichterin Alice V. Stuart (1899-1983), wie Korrespondenz-Archivalien von John Masefield nahelegen (e.g. 15 letters from Masefield to Alice V. Stuart, in the years 1945-1961, held by: National Library of Scotland, Manuscript Collections; cf. discovery.nationalarchives.gov uk). -- Masefield's poem 'Land Workers' is described by Stephen Spender as "perhaps the crown of his achievement" (zit. in: G. Plain, Literature of the 1940s: War, Postwar and 'Peace', vol. 5, Edinburgh 2013, p. 32). -- "Kingswod was the home of Heinemann's Windmill Press. Opened in January 1928 it was located in rural surrey just outside Greater London and had a printing press, bindery, warehouse, offices and a staff of 150. Heinemann had evacuated to Kingswood after war was declared, leaving just a skeleton staff at its London office." (J. Kloester, Georgette Heyer. London 2011, p. 198). -- John Masefield (Ledbury, Herefordshire 1878?1967 near Abingdon, Berkshire), British poet, "best known for his poems of the sea [.], and for his long narrative poems, such as The Everlasting Mercy (1911), which shocked literary orthodoxy with its phrases of a colloquial coarseness hitherto unknown in 20th-century English verse. [.] After he succeeded Robert Bridges as poet laureate in 1930, his poetry became more austere." Aufl. 1973). - Sprache: en.…
