Es basiert auf einer sorbischen Volkssage und erzählt die Geschichte des gleichnamigen Jungen, der Lehrling eines Zaubermeisters wird und sich gegen diesen behaupten muss. Am Ende siegt die Liebe über die dunklen Mächte. Inhalt: Der Roman spielt in der Lausitz während des Großen Nordischen Kriegs. Er handelt von dem 14-jährigen sorbischen Waisenjungen Krabat, der Lehrling in einer Mühle im Koselbruch bei Schwarzkollm wird. Die Mühle stellt sich jedoch schon nach kurzer Zeit als eine Schwarze Schule" heraus, in der der Müllermeister Krabat und elf weitere Mühlknappen in der Schwarzen Kunst unterrichtet. . Entstehung: Otfried Preußler schrieb mit Unterbrechungen zehn Jahre an Krabat. Als Vorlage diente ihm die sorbische Volkssage von Krabat, die Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts nahe dem Ort Schwarzkollm in der Oberlausitz zwischen Hoyerswerda (Wojerecy) und Kamenz (Kamjenc) spielt. Die Geschichte des Lehrlings, der sich gegen seinen Meister behaupten muss und ihn zum Kampf herausfordert, findet sich auch in vielen anderen Sagen, ebenso wie das Motiv der Erlösung durch die Liebe.
