Añadir al carritoBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condición: Very Good. Henry Sampson Woodfall prosecuted for publishing Junius's letter critical of royal authority. 14 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 15 x 25 cms. Category: State Trials; State Trials::Octavo; Cosmo Books : 29 years on ABE, 47 years taking care of customers. A bookseller you can rely on.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Transcripts of these famous letters with 2 folding facsimilies of letters. Two volumes in one: vol. 1, 216 p. ; vol. 2, 215 p. These letters are from the London edition of Woodfall's Junius, and contain his annotations and notes. Junius was the pseudonym of an unkown writer in England. His letters were published between 1769 and 1772 and deal with his views of corruption in English government and notions of freedom of speech, press, etc. Henry Woodfall was the printer of The Advertiser, the paper in which these letters originally appeared in London. Scattered light foxing to the title page and foldout letters, old owner name in pencil and small old owner name stamp, else a nice clean, tight and unmarked book in original publisher's red blind stamped cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. This is undated, but probably was published about 1850 based on the look and feel of the book--the title page of volume 2 indicates a publication date of [1853? ]--last number is hard to read. ; Facsimilie Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 216, 215 pages.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Hardcover Condition: Good+. Full calf. Three volumes. Vol. I cover detached. Vols. II and III covers are loosening but still attached. Ownership inscription on FFEP of each volume and bookplate on endpaper of each volume. Clean interior with minimal foxing Junius is the pseudonym of the still unidentified author of a series of letters contributed to Henry Sampson Woodfall's Public Advertiser, a popular English newspaper of the day, between Jan. 21, 1769, and Jan. 21, 1772. Junius' aims were to discredit the ministries of the Duke of Grafton and subsequently of Lord North and to draw attention to the political influence of George III, who was trying to establish his own "personal government" by selecting his ministers from a group of subservient friends. Junius used arcasm in attacking the public and private lives of Grafton and his associates, the Duke of Bedford, the Earl of Bute, and Lord Mansfield. He also attacked King George himself which lead the government to (unsuccessfully) prosecute Woodfall for seditious libel for having printed the letter. Apart from their significance as a literary controversy and their importance in the history of the freedom of the press, Junius' letters are notable for their style and the unsolved mystery of their authorship. The identity of Junius is open to question and debate, and may never be finally resolved unless documents are found which establish his identity. Some scholars support the identification of Philip Francis. The 1st Marquess of Lansdowne claimed to know the 'Junius secret' two weeks before his death, but died without revealing what he thought he knew.
