Whittier : The Poet of Freedom". in which Mr. Kennedy gives in great detail the history of Whittier's Anti-Slavery activities and his contributions to the cause of Abolition. Carlos Martyn, in his excellent "The American Reformers Series", focused on six courageous men, who contributed towards positive change in America. They were John Gough, the great Temperance orator (Apostle of Cold Water); William Dodge, (the Christian Merchant); Wendell Phillips, abolitionist and spokesman for Native Americans; Frederick Douglass, the great Black orator and Abolitionist; John Brown, Abolitionist; and John G. Whittier, poet and Abolitionist. Note that three of the six were Abolitionists. It is the last individual listed above who is taken up as a subject in the book here presented. Almost everybody knows John G. Whittier the poet; but even knowing some of the topics of various poems of his, there may be a substantial number of people who are totally unaware of the great poet's unflagging anti-slavery struggles in the cause of Abolition. It was the one over-riding cause in his life, and if Whittier was a poet - and a great poet at that, striving in the cause of literature - it was often in support of an even greater cause that he took pen to paper and produced such eloquent and beautiful poetry. The following is a brief excerpt from the section of the book dealing with Whittier's anti-slavery activities : "Soon after the publication of 'Justice and Expediency' there appeared in the Haverhill 'Gazette' Whittier's first anti-slavery poem, the lines to Garrison, 'Champion of those who groan beneath oppression's iron hand', which was quickly followed by 'Toussaint L'Ouverture' and 'The Slave-Ships', the beginning of a long and remarkable series of poems of freedom, extending over a period of thirty years. Whittier has now unfurled his flag and taken his place in the ranks of freedom, and it behooves us to get some idea of the situation, appreciate the sacrifice made, understand the obloquy and danger undergone by the reformers, the sufferings of the slave and the attitude of society and the Church toward the doctrine of immediate emancipation. In short, I purpose to forecast the years, and briefly touch on the more salient features of the Abolition struggle, so that those who were not of it may better understand the part played by Whittier in the movement.
