Paperback. Condición: Good. America Afire is the powerful story of the election of 1800, arguably the most important election in America's history and certainly one of the most hotly disputed. Former allies Adams and Jefferson, president versus vice president, Federalist versus Republican, squared off in a vicious contest that resulted in broken friendships, scandals, riots, slander, and jailings in the fourth presidential election under the Constitution. The election of 1800 (not unlike that of 2000) was a tumultuous one, replete with an attempt to steal the victory from a controversial winner; deadlocked parties hell-bent on success; and a nation divided. Thomas Jefferson vs. John Adams--one of the most slanderous campaigns in the history of the nation. Added to that were backroom connivings and threatened riots serious enough to badly bend a young and shaky electoral system. The election ended in a tie--between the Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates. After 7 straight days of voting in the Congress, Jefferson finally became president. America Afire is a timely tale that not only enlightens and entertains, but reassures us of the continuity and durability of our institutions. …

From its founding as a steel-making area that rivaled any in the world for quality and quantity, to its present-day role as a leading banking, retail, and medical center for the New South, the rolling, iron-rich land of Jefferson County has been well represented in picture postcards. Roving photographers and those from local studios captured scenes of civic, business, and private life, and made them into postcards that were sent around the world. Birmingham and Jefferson County, Alabama takes the reader on a visual tour of such landmarks as the Tutwiler Hotel, the Empire Building, Rickwood Field, Legion Field, Arlington, and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Explore the beginnings of world-class medical facilities, the rise of the iron and steel industry, and the rich cultural heritage that the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Italians, Greeks, and other ethnic groups brought to the area.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. It is 1806; a powerful and criminal secret society has almost complete control over many of the elected officials, international finance, and commerce in the young nation. Its leaders arrange for a dissident to be brutally murdered and left floating in the Potomac River so that the body surfaces within clear site of Thomas Jefferson's White House. This criminal act is intended to send a message to the President and all those around him: 'the society's power should know no limit - elected officials - including the president - must acknowledge and support us, allow us to do whatever we want, when and wherever we choose, or suffer the consequences'.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. On June 4, 1781 Thomas Jefferson fled Monticello mere minutes ahead of the British soldiers rushing to capture him. He nearly became the most valuable American prisoner of the Revolutionary War: his life - and the momentum of the entire war - balanced on a razor's edge. In Flight from Monticello, Michael Kranish illuminates the central importance of this harrowing moment to Jefferson's life and to the fate of the young nation. Flight from Monticello is a sweeping narrative of clashing armies, of spies, intrigue, desperate decisions, and gut-wrenching battles. In vivid, precisely observed scenes, Kranish captures the tumultuous outbreak of war, the local politics guiding Jefferson's actions in the Continental Congress, and his rise to become the second governor of Virginia. A lifelong belief in the corrupting influence of a powerful executive led Jefferson to argue for a weak governorship, one that lacked the means to raise an adequate army. The state was thus woefully unprepared for the invading British troops who sailed up the James under the direction of a recently turned Benedict Arnold. Facing only rag-tag resistance, the British force took Virginia with little trouble. George Washington, alarmed that his home state - and with it, the nation - might have fallen to the British, began preparations for the historic confrontation at Yorktown. Kranish describes Jefferson's struggle to respond to the invasion and paints an intimate and compelling portrait, illuminating Jefferson's quiet conversations, his family turmoil, and his private hours at Monticello. Jefferson would be haunted for the rest of his life by his actions as governor, and his career was dogged by accusations of wartime incompetence. The lessons he learned during those dark hours would have a profound and lasting influence on his political thinking, and on the nature of the American presidency. Flight from Monticello sheds new light on a little-known yet momentous time in Jefferson's life - and in the birth of America. …

Hardback. Condición: Good. Thomas Jefferson's was one of history's greatest voices for the importance of individual freedom. His eloquence on this fundamental right became the cornerstone of our nation and a central theme of the Enlightenment. And yet Jefferson presided over a society that depended on slavery, and he was himself the holder of many slaves. How are students of history to reconcile this contradiction in the third president? Now the celebrated biographer and historian Natalie Bober presents a life of Jefferson that does not evade this difficult question. Bober explores the slave community that built and maintained his home, Monticello - and what their lives under Jefferson tell us about him and about slavery as an early American institution. To assess fully what Jefferson might mean to our time, we must first understand what it meant to be a man of his own time. From the first page, the world he inhabited is made vivid - and so, too, is Jefferson himself, standing before us as a shy, freckle-faced, and, for the eighteenth century, unusually tall young man. Bober follows him through a life in which the presidency was just one of many accomplishments. As designer of Monticello and other renowned buildings, he was one of the great architects of his era; as founder of the University of Virginia, he was one of the nation's early champions of higher education. His greatest legacy is perhaps as author of the Declaration of Independence, a nearly unrivaled instance of words giving tangible meaning to life. The Jefferson revealed here is distinguished by his often contradictory nature but also by his optimism, his curiosity, his exceptional sense of history (including the history still to be made). While primarily aimed at young adult readers, the book is a substantial work of scholarship, based on many years' research of primary-source materials (including black oral history) and the most current writings, and like Bober's earlier works, should attract students of history of all ages. This book faces the fact that Jefferson was a flawed human being - yet insists that this does not disqualify him as a hero.…
