Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Jayne's Bartender's Guide, A Practical Handbook for Professionals and Amateurs Dr. D. Jayne and Son, Inc, Philadelphia, 1933. Presumed First Edition. Original wrappers, 5 by 4 1/2 inches, 152 pages plus ads. Recipes include the Charlie Chaplin Cocktail, the Pousse Cafe American, the Klondyke Cocktail, Havana / Serpents Tooth, Stiff Horses Neck, White Lion, Mamie Taylor, Eau de Absinthe, etc. Jayne's was a patent medicine manufacturer and was very active in the 20's and 30's. There are adverts in this booklet for their various products, ranging from skin cream to laxatives and 'tonic pills' for gentlemen wishing to still be "frisky at sixty". The introduction states: "Of the making of drinks there is no end. Even to classify all known mixed drinks into headings would be a formidable task. However, since the blending of liquors, wines and other delectable beverages into satisfying drinks has been a more or less a secret art for the past decade or more, our happy escape from the restrictions of the Eighteenth Amendment (may it rest in peace!) calls for some sudden expert knowledge of these mixtures." A cheaply produced volume, but a popular one with cocktail bloggers. In addition to recipes for cocktails and mixed drinks, there are also formulae for making some long-lost ingredients such as Stoughton's Bitter, Angostura Bitters, Orange Bitters, Usquebaugh Cordial, and loads of other curiosities. [Anistatia Miller] Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover].

Tan illustrated softcovers, Art Deco lettering front cover, yapp fore-edges (minor shelfwear, pulling to lower fore-edge of title at gutter margin, slight creasing), still a VG copy, from the library of Samuel S. Berman (1906-1982), longtime San Francisco attorney, patron of the arts. First edition of this popular cocktail guide issued by the Philadelphia patent quackery medicine supply house first founded by David Jayne before the Civil War, intending to capitalize on the revival of cocktails following the repeal of Prohibition. Including sections on drinks, cobblers, brandies, punches, cocktails, theatrical drinks, fizzes, syrups, and even helpful hints, this guidebook was intended to ensure that bars & taverns offered the purest and best cocktails & drinks to their customers. Along with the myriad of cocktails & mixed drinks featuring bitters, absinthe, and others, the work includes an extensive section on wines. Of course, Jayne & Son as evidenced by the ads at the rear did not overlook the opportunities to sell their "cures" for upset stomachs, constipation, hangovers, erectile dysfunction, and skin cleansers.
