Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket shows edge wear, wear marks, scuffs and scratches throughout. The outside text block shows signs of wear. Edges slightly bumped and turning inwards. Interior with signs of wear. Good condition overall.; Catalogue from an exhibition of Non-Iwami Netsuke from the collection of Robert S. Huthart Collection.; "I am immensely proud to have been allowed the opportunity of acquiring the Non-Iwami Netsuke Collection of Robert (Bob) S. Huthart, offered for sale in this catalogue. Bob's collection is unquestionably one of the greatest assembled since the last war, and is the most important to have come onto the market since the M.T. Hindson collection was auctioned by Sotheby's in the late 60s and early 70s. It contains no fewer than fourteen pieces by Masanao of Kyoto, eighteen by Toyomasa of Tamba, and eleven by Masatsugu of Osaka, as well as one of the most pleasing pieces carved by Tomotada, the famous cat with captured rat (catalogue number 91), and wonderful unsigned pieces, many from some of the most renowned collections assembled earlier this century. The collection represents pieces from most of the great masters from each of the most important netsuke regions, and Bob's unerring eye has ensured that these are some of the best carvings from these masters. Examples of this are the six quite superb representations from Sukenaga of Hida, the four from Ikkan of Nagoya, and the seven from Tomokazu of Gifu." excerpt from the foreword by Barry Davies, 3 May 1998.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket in slipcase - 2 VOLUMES).; 24 x 31.5 cm; 3.1 kg.; 408 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The slipcase shows edge wear and wear marks throughout, has a small bump at the bottom right side and his slightly faded on the top left side. The dust jacket of volume I is slightly loose and has minor edge wear, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. The dust jacket of volume II has edge wear and minor scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover, and a few wrinkle/wear marks at the middle of the back cover, also seem at the rear (only if the dust jacket is removed). The bottom of the spine of volume II has a bump. The interior of both volumes is in good condition with minor signs of wear.; This is the first major publication devoted to netsuke (carved toggles) produced in and around the remote province of Iwami in the west of Honshu, Japan's main island. Isolated from the major economic and cultural centres of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan, the Iwami netsuke artists developed a unique style of carving, working in unusual materials such as boar's tusk, killer-whale tooth and umimatsu (a form of fossilised coral), and drawing their subject-matter from some of the humblest denizens of the natural world around them, including centipedes, cicadas, crabs, frogs, toads and tortoises. Robert S. Huthart's collection of Iwami netsuke, the largest anywhere in the world, includes more than 360 examples and is particularly rich in signed pieces by the five most famous Iwami carvers: Tomiharu (the founder of the Iwami style), his daughter Bunsho, her nephew Gansui, the independent artist Kanman, and Goho, who was active in the neighbouring province of Aki. The catalogue includes at least one colour reproduction of each piece alongside a detailed description and information about subject-matter and provenance. Particular care has been taken over the long signatures that are a distinguishing feature of Iwami netsuke, especially those by Tomiharu: each is transcribed, transliterated and accurately translated for the very first time. A historical introduction outlines the cultural background of Iwami carving and summarises the available information about the better-known artists, while a series of indices at the end of the catalogue enables the reader to trace individual netsuke by artist, subject, date and collection.
