The tale of the 1878 failed expedition of the crew of the schooner "Jeannette" who tried to reach the North Pole by sailing into the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia only to have the vessel crushed by the ice and most of the crew dead from starvation and privation. The author bases the book on the commander's journals and the lengthy Congressional inquiry into the expedition after its failure. The boards have a lighter blue wavy highlight front and rear. The title page shows a crack nalong the spine. The rest of the book is tightly bound, age toned and has my late father's name and the date November 20, 1938 at the top of the inside of the fep. "In Under the Red Sea Sun, Ellsberg complained that the American contractor that was assigned to give him administrative support was very unhelpful, but he did not name that company. The company, Johnson, Drake & Piper, itself claimed credit for clearing the port in the privately printed book, "Middle East War Projects of Johnson, Drake & Piper, Inc. , for the Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army, 19421943" (New York: Johnson, Drake & Piper, Inc. , 1943). That book contains photographs and drawings showing wartime projects around the Middle East. From Massawa, Ellsberg went to North Africa to become Principal Salvage Officer in that theater. He worked under Admiral Andrew Cunningham, the British officer commanding naval forces in the area. Ellsberg's activities were detailed in his book No Banners, No Bugles. " (from Wikipedia).…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. "This very nice item was published in 1938 by Dodd, Mead and Company of New York. It is a first edition with 1938 on the title page. The blue cloth boards are in very good condition with very little rubbing to the edges and very little wear to the corners. There are several modest spots on the front and back but otherwise the cover is very good plus condition. There is some browning to the end papers, both front and back, right along the spine but the end paper maps are overall bright and attractive. The interior is in very plus condition with one exception: the front fly leaf has separated from the title page but is still firmly secured in the binding. Overall, this book is in very good plus condition. This is original text and not a reprint. The book gives a riveting account of "The Saga of the 'Jeannette'". In 1879 an American expedition set out in search of the North Pole but tragedy would grip the expedition in it hands as the Jeannette became trapped and then crushed by the Arctic Ice. 421 pages.". …
