How can we create new stories and new systems that allow all of humanity to flourish? How can we journey toward a collective and robust future? Illustrated in his world-renowned art style, Oliver Jeffers? reflection on the patterns that have led us to where we are today, the stories we have governed ourselves by, and those we might adopt going forward, is insightful, moving, and powerful. Hardback. Condición: Very Good. A visit to a physician these days is cold: physicians spend most of their time typing at computers, making minimal eye contact. Appointments generally last only a few minutes, with scarce time for the doctor to connect to a patient's story, or explain how and why different procedures and treatments might be undertaken. As a result, errors abound: indeed, misdiagnosis is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States, trailing only heart disease, cancer, and stroke. This is because, despite having access to more resources than ever, doctors are vulnerable not just to the economic demand to see more patients, but to distraction, burnout, data overload, and their own intrinsic biases. Physicians are simply overmatched. As Eric Topol argues in Deep Medicine, artificial intelligence can help. Natural-language processing could automatically record notes from our doctor visits; virtual psychiatrists could better predict the risk of suicide or other mental health issues for vulnerable patients; deep-learning software will make every physician a master diagnostician; and we could even use smartphone apps to take our own medical "selfies" for skin exams and receive immediate analysis. . On top of that, the virtual smartphone assistants of today--Alexa, Siri, Cortana--could analyze our daily health data to reduce the need for doctor visits and trips to the emergency room, and support for people suffering from asthma, epilepsy, and heart disease. By integrating tools like these into their daily medical practice, doctors would be able to spend less time collecting and cataloging information, and more time providing thorough, intimate, and meaningful care for their patients, as no machine can.Artificial intelligence can also help remedy the debilitating cost of healthcare, both for individuals and the economy writ large. The medical sector now absorbs 20 percent of the US gross domestic product--it is largest sector by dollars and jobs. And it's very inefficient. Take the cost of medical scans: There are over 20 million medical scans performed in the US every day, and an MRI, for example, costs hundreds to thousands of dollars. AI could process 260 million medical scans (more than 2 weeks' worth) in less than 24 hours for a cost of only $1000. We pay billions and billions of dollars for the same work today. The American health care system needs a serious reboot, and artificial intelligence is just the thing to press the restart button. As innovative as it is hopeful, Deep Medicine ultimately shows us how we can leverage artificial intelligence for better care at lower costs with more empathy, for the benefit of patients and physicians alike.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. "John Dunne writes with intelligence, style, grace, and sure and discerning spiritual insight. Like all writers of really good spiritual theology, Dunne never betrays his subject matter with the kind of pious posturing or psycho-babble gimmickry that too often passes for 'spiritual writing.' His prose is crisp without being dense or rattling. His theological sensitivity is alert to nuance without becoming trapped into mere jargon. His care for the heart of authentic spirituality, like Henri Nouwen's, is steady and believable. Dunne chooses the classical religious metaphor of the 'journey' and invites his readers to join him in a journey into solitude and back again into the human circle. He insists that we accept as guides in this journey the great spiritual masters of the Eastern and Western traditions. Thus in reading Reasons of the Heart, we find ourselves in the presence of some of the best insights of John's Gospel, Augustine, Aquinas, Dante, Pascal, Kierkegaard, Buber, the Buddha, and Jesus. Dunne skillfully invites the reader to 'pass over' to a religious and theological vision of God and of our common humanity in our journey to authentic spirituality. Like Whitehead, Dunne believes that religion, above all, has to do with what an individual does with his/her solitariness. More than Whitehead, Dunne is concerned not only to have the individual enter solitariness, but also finally to leave it behind and rejoin the human community." --David Tracy, The Critic.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. In this third edition of a book that has become a classic, Professor Heilbroner leaves the question in place on the first page, believing some twenty years later that that interrogative sounds the themes of the 1990s as well. The main components of the global predicament he described in the first edition are still with us today: runaway populations, obliterative weaponry, and a closing environmental vise. Writing now, in the aftermath of the extraordinary events that caused communism as a challenger to capitalism to vanish "like a puff of smoke," Professor Heilbroner traces out the difficulties that beset those attempting centrally planned economics. He shows how Soviet-style systems became mired in bureaucratic swamps. But he warns that the triumph of profit-driven, market-directed economies will not delay the looming encounter with the ecological barrier. "The absorption capacities of the environment," writes Professor Heilbroner, "whether in terms of the greenhouse effect or the overrunning of other physico-chemical capabilities of the planet" still determine the limits of the economic expansion. Trenchant and unflinching, Professor Heilbroner's look at the sum and substance of our prospects for the remaining years of this century is provocative and indispensable reading for those who prefer not to avert their gaze from the hard realities of our times.…
