First letter begins: "I am greatly obliged to you for your letter of Feb. 21st, in which you tell me of the formation of the 'Pinero Club' in San Francisco, ." Handwritten signed note, one page on mourning paper (stiff card) , approx. 3 1/2" wide by 4 1/2", printed letterhead Stillands, Chiddingfold, Godalming, handwritten 2nd Aug 1914: "Unfortunately I am not in London just now, and cannot, therefore, have the pleasure of seeing you. ." Included is an original black-and-white photograph, 3 1/2" by 4 1/2", professionally mounted to photographer's backing: photographed by Alfred Ellis, 20, Upper Baker St. , N. W. Arthur Richard Wellesley, Second Duke of Wellington: "Captain Hewett has my permission to fish at Hampton Court during the present season- June 1859. Wellington." The note was originally folded and has three cre…ase lines and was at some point mounted on lightweight ivory card. /Lieutenant-General Arthur Richard Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington, KG, PC (1807Ð1884) British soldier and politician. The eldest son of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, victor of Waterloo and Prime Minister, he succeeded his father in the dukedom in 1852 and held minor political office as Master of the Horse from 1853 to 1858. In 1858, he was made a Knight of the Garter./ Possibly Captain James Duff Hewett (1830-1865) son of Lt.-Col. William Hewett (1795Ð1891) whose son, James Duff Hewett, served as a Captain in the New Zealand Wanganui Militia. James was killed by M_ori in February 1865 during the New Zealand Wars. His killers took a sword that had been carried by William Hewett at Waterloo. It was later recaptured and returned to the family. Further research may prove rewarding. Very good. Slight wear, slight creasing and marking with very small loss in crease. Signedes.
