First edition of the travelogue of Ludwig Tschudi to the Holy Land. An early accurate description of the Sanctuary of Aphrodite at Palepaphos. Ludwig Tschudi (the Younger, 1495-1530), member of the distinguished Swiss Tschudi family of Glarus, brother of Aedigus, the author of Chronicon Helveticum, was a military officer, who in 1519 undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where he got knighted by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. His travelogue was only published in 1606, edited by one of his descendant, Melchior Tschudi. On his journey, Tschudi was accompanied by sixteen men, among them Peter Falck (1468-1519), town clerk of Fribourg, who while on the journey was contracted the plague and died at Rhodes. They continued their way to Jerusalem and Syria via Cyprus. On the return journey, they spent some time on the island, due to illness among the pilgrims. While there Tschudi visited the area of Palaepaphos and became the first traveler who realized that the famous Sanctuary of Aphrodite mentioned in the ancient sources, was situated there at the village Kouklia. Tschudi also described his visits to St. Mamas Monastery, the Stavrovouni Monastery and to Salamis (discussed on pp. 338-348).
