Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. GOODWIN, THOMAS, B.D. (1600-1680) Independent pastor. Westminster Assembly. The Glories of Christ : Set Forth in His Mediatorial Character under Several Offices in His Death, Resurrection, Ascension, Sitting at God's Right Hand, and Intercession. Together with the Triumphs of Christ over the Empire of Satan, Sin, Death and Hell; to which is added A Short View of the Tenderness of Christ now in Heaven, to His Redeemed members, under all their Infirmities, Here on Earth. With a Short Memoir of the Life of the Author by Robert Hawker, D.D., Vicar of Charles, Plymouth. Plymouth : J. Bennett, 1817. 8vo. xiii, 430 pp. Probably the first edition as JISC lists an 1818 edition only. Brown cloth spine with stiff card covers. Clean and solid though showing general wear with good, tight binding. Paper label on spine is worn but the author and title can be made out. Formerly belonging to the Strict Baptist Chapel Library in Nottingham, so there is a nice label to this effect inside the front cover. The book had to be returned to the Library within one month, so there was some good solid speedy reading to be had! Frontispiece portrait of Goodwin is clear by rather grubby. Otherwise the book has been treated well by the Strict Baptists and remains clean and crisp. Inside the final endpaper there is a page of very neat manuscript writing. Deciphering this may be quite interesting! It looks as if it has something to do with the doctrine of repentance. Whatever it is, it is bound to be very sound and spiritually uplifting. "This voluminous writer possessed several preferments at Cambridge, and was one of the Members of the Assembly of Divines. By Cromwell, he was appointed President of Magdalen College, Oxford, where he converted the College into an independent meeting. He attended Cromwell on his deathbed. His works, which mainly consist of Expositions and Sermons, have ever maintained the highest station among those of the Calvinistic school. He died in London in 1680 at the age of 79." -Straker's catalogue (1834-35).

Añadir al carritoThe typescript was produced on an early dot-matrix computer printer. The corrections are in pencil in Wilson's hand. Also included is a second fair-copy draft of part of the story, with typed pages numbered 24--28 and 30 (the last page). The story, an unusual tale of a boy's encounter with a monster and a monster costume, was first published in the October 1984 issue of PLAYBOY, The story was reprinted in THE CLEFT AND OTHER ODD TALES, a 1998 collection published by Tor. Wilson, known primarily for his distinctively macabre-but-funny cartoons has also been quite active as a writer of fiction, a book reviewer for THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION, and an anthologist of weird tales. "Grotesque" is perhaps the best single term for his style, with its connotation of medieval gargoyles. His stories are Gahan Wilson cartoons come to life. Aside from some mild paper-clip indents at upper left corners, the manuscript is in nearly fine condition. (#140971).
