A photographic facsimile and line-for-line transcription of a manuscript notebook written by Joyce circa 1911-1914, at a time when he was finishing A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN and beginning ULYSSES. Richard Ellmann, who provides the introduction, asserts that it is "a love poem which is never recited.Joyce's attempt at the sentimental education of a dark lady, his farewell to a phase of his life, and at the same time his discovery of a new form of imaginitive expression." Though Joyce never published this little piece, he did extract pieces and phrases from it for inclusion in A PORTRAIT, ULYSSES, and his play EXILES.
