In diesem Zusammenhang untersucht Singer fundamentale Prinzipien moralischen Argumentierens und die Bedingungen, unter denen sie anwendbar und gültig sind. Sein spezifischer Ansatz geht aus vom Prinzip der Folgen (in seiner verallgemeinerten Form): "Wenn die Folgen davon, daß jeder x täte, nicht wünschenswert wären, dann sollte nicht jeder x tun." In Verbindung mit dem Prinzip der Verallgemeinerung, das in der Tradition auch als das Prinzip der Gerechtigkeit, Fairneß oder Unparteilichkeit bekannt ist: "Was für einen richtig ist, muß unter ähnlichen Umständen auch für jeden anderen richtig sein" bildet es die Grundlage eines Arguments, das nach Singers Auffassung - zumindest implizit - das zentrale Argument eines jeden moralischen Disputs ist, in dem es darum geht, Handlungen und Normen zu rechtfertigen.
