This is one of The Universal Library series. Frederick Albert Gutheim (March 3, 1908 - October 2, 1993) was an urban planner and historian, architect, and author. He is noted for writing The Potomac, a history of the Potomac River and the 40th volume in the Rivers of America Series, and Worthy of the Nation a history of the development of Washington, D.C. Gutheim earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1931, and did graduate work at the University of Chicago. In addition to writing many books, Gutheim served as the staff director of the joint congressional committee on Washington Metropolitan Problems and was the president of the Washington Center for Metropolitan Studies. He was also on the JFK's Advisory Council on Pennsylvania Avenue and the National Capital Regional Planning Council. While serving on these committees, he wrote articles for the New York Herald Tribune, Progressive Architecture, Inland Architect and the Washington Post. Gutheim taught or held administrator positions as the University of Michigan, Williams College, George Washington University, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The pinnacle of his career may have been the photographic exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. that he created of American architecture to celebrate 100th anniversary of the American Institute of Architects. The exhibition was heralded as a landmark in American architecture, journalism, and academia. Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 - April 9, 1959) was an American architect, designer, writer, and educator. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was exemplified in Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture". Selected writing of Wright on the subject of architecture. Here are expressed all of the famous concepts which have come to mean modern architecture: functional design, cantilever construction, the exploration of scale and proportion, the organic concept of space, the fresh expression of building materials, the exalted idea of lyric construction, the development of new and significant forms, and the humanization of buildings. The contents include Preface, Introduction, 1894-1908: Declaration of Faith, 1908-1918: In the Cause of Architecture, 1918-1928: The Nature of Materials, 1928-1935: The International Style, 1935-1938: Taliesin, 1938-1940: Education and the Issues, Published Writings of Frank Lloyd Wright, and Index. Presumed First Paperback Edition, First printing thus.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Poor. 1st ed. index, xviii, 275p. Original cloth. dj. 22cm. Jacket chipped and worn, and also split along folds. Gift inscription. This book has been sitting online and in our art and architecture section for a decade attracting no attention. Phil noticed the gift inscription ("Professor Corbin, With my deepest admiration and best wishes, from a grateful pupil, Shirley Adelson. May 21, 1941") on a Saturday afteroon and wondered who Professor Corbin and Shirley Adelson might be. IShirley Adelson Siegel, 1918-2020, a Phi Beta Kappa Barnard graduate had subsequently attended the London School of Economics and then was the only women in the class of 1941 at Yale Law School. Despite ranking 4th in her class of 125, Adelson had trouble getting a job. According to the Yale Law School notice of her death, Professor Arthur L. Corbin, after hearing that she was having trouble getting a job, wrote to potential employers in New York, saying: "'She is one of the best in industry, in mental power and in personality. Anyone who employs her in legal work will have reason to be thankful to us." She still had trouble getting a job and was turned down by 40 firms. Proskauer, Rose & Paskus finally hired her at the firm's first female attorney. This book may have been her grateful acknowledgement of Corbin's kind effort to help her find emplyment despite being a woman. Siegel appears to have worked in private practice for 20 years without ever becoming a partner. She was involved heavily with pro bono work in various areas including Japanese internment, civil rights and housing. She served as New York State's Solicitor General, 1989-1992.
