The idea to establish a European forum for academic and industrial researchers working on various aspects of performance modeling and analysis of manuf- toring and information systems gave rise to an annual series of workshops, - ferred to as European Performance Engineering Workshop (EPEW). The ?rst two EPEW workshops were held in Toledo, Spain, October 1-2, 2004, and V- sailles,France,September 1-3,2005.Thisvolumecontainstheproceedingsofthe third EPEW workshop held at the Technical University of Budapest, Budapest, Hungary, June 21-22, 2006. These proceedings comprise the 16 accepted contributed papers of EPEW 2006.Toensurethehigh-qualityevaluationofthesubmittedpapersweextended the ProgramCommittee of EPEW 2006with international experts from all over the world. Each submitted papers went through a rigorous review by at least three international reviewers. Based on the reviews, the subsequent discussions ofreviewerswithdi?erentjudgementandanInternet-basedProgramCommittee meeting held on March 30, 2006, we selected 40% of the submitted papers. We therefore owe special thanks to all members of the Program Committee and to all external referees for the excellent work they did for the proper evaluation of the papers. The ?nal workshop program, as well as this volume, are made up of ?ve thematic sessions: Stochastic process algebra Workloads and benchmarks Theory of stochastic processes Formal dependability and performance evaluation Queues, theory and practice These sessions cover a wide range of performance evaluation methods and c- pose an overview of the current research directions in performance evaluation. Constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third European Performance Engineering Workshop, EPEW 2006, held in Budapest, Hungary in June 2006. This book contains topical sections on stochastic process algebra, workloads and benchmarks, theory of stochastic processes, and formal dependability and performance evaluation. The establishment of a European forum for researchers in performance modeling and analysis of manufacturing and information systems led to the annual European Performance Engineering Workshop (EPEW). The initial workshops took place in Toledo, Spain, in October 2004, and Versailles, France, in September 2005. This volume presents the proceedings from the third EPEW workshop held at the Technical University of Budapest, Hungary, on June 21-22, 2006. It includes 16 accepted contributed papers from EPEW 2006. To ensure high-quality evaluations, the Program Committee was expanded to include international experts, with each submission undergoing a rigorous review process by at least three reviewers. Ultimately, 40% of the submitted papers were selected for inclusion based on thorough discussions and an Internet-based Program Committee meeting. Special thanks are extended to the Program Committee members and external referees for their diligent work. The final program and this volume feature five thematic sessions: Stochastic Process Algebra, Workloads and Benchmarks, Theory of Stochastic Processes, Formal Dependability and Performance Evaluation, and Queues, Theory and Practice. These sessions encompass a broad spectrum of performance evaluation methods, reflecting current research directions in the field.

This comprehensive work delves into various optimization problems in service provisioning systems, exploring Markov chains and their implications on steady-state probabilities, particularly regarding reward-based measures and equilibrium distributions. It discusses compositionality for Markov reward chains with rapid transitions and presents closed-form absorption time bounds alongside a canonical representation of order 3 phase-type distributions. The text also covers process algebras and state machines, introducing SPAMR, an extension of PAMR with stochastic time, and highlights advancements in SPDL model checking through property-driven state space generation. Additionally, it evaluates finite state machines with stochastic time and timeouts, investigates peer-to-peer (P2P) systems, and assesses P2P search algorithms for trust path discovery. The work emphasizes building online performance models for grid middleware, particularly through a case study on the Globus Toolkit, and proposes a performance measuring framework for grid market middleware. It further explores queueing theory applications, including a fixed-point algorithm for closed queueing networks and automated architectural feedback generation from software performance analysis. The text also examines optimal dynamic server allocation in systems with on/off sources, workload characterization of benchmarks, and resource sharing in performance models. Lastly, it.
