First commercially released in 1974, the game pioneered a unique blend of fantasy storytelling, strategy, and imagination, with players creating characters and navigating adventures in a collaborative setting. The game quickly gained popularity, evolving through various editions and developing a dedicated community. By the early 1990s, Dungeons and Dragons had become a cultural phenomenon, influencing literature, art, and even video games, establishing itself as the cornerstone of the role-playing game genre. This map covers the majority of the world of Faerun, the geographic setting for the 'Forgotten Realms' D&D campaign first released in 1987. The image presents a colorful overview of the local geography between the Sword Coast and the Kingdom of the Rashemen in the Unapproachable East. Various physical features (most of which affect gameplay) are depicted pictorially and noted in the legend in the lower left. Places of interest like Baldur's Gate, Suzail, and Waterdeep connect to illustrated vignettes that hint at the numerous friends and foes to be met therein. Published in 1996 by TSR, Inc., the original publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, for a revised version of the 2nd edition of The Forgotten Realms. The following year, the franchise would be acquired by Wizards of the Coast.
