Añadir al carritoPaper-Covered Boards. Condición: Fine. Early Reprint. Ninth Edition, complete in three volumes with 80 hand-colored aquatints by Thomas Rowlandson. (Eighty-one plates are called for on the title pages, but the plate lists contain a total of only 79, with the illustrated title page in Vol. 3 unlisted. Presumably, there was an illustrated title page planned for the Second Tour but never included.) Tall 8vo's: [6],272,[6, catalog of books published by Nattali and Bond]; [4],277,[1]; [6],279,[1]pp. Hand-marbled paper-covered boards, finely woven green cloth spines, matching morocco lettering pieces gilt, recently bound by Fitterer, a truly splendid production. Fine bindings; clean, wide-margined pages with only occasional offsetting; vibrant, deep, rich, fresh coloring. Abbey, Life, 265-67. Tooley 427-29. The three tours of Doctor Syntax, featuring the comic, skin-and-bone cleric at the mercy of all manner of misadventures, were supposedly based on an idea of Thomas Rowlandson's close friend, the actor Jack Bannister, and first appeared in 1812, 1820, and 1821, respectively. William Combe's verses for Rowlandson's illustrations, produced by the prestigious publisher and art dealer Rudolph Ackermann, earned Combe his soubrette, Doctor Syntax. "Combining a light-hearted satire of William Gilpin's theory of the picturesque in art with a central character modelled on Cervantes' Don Quixote and Henry Fielding's Parson Adams, Combe created a lovable eccentric whose misadventures on the road structure the Tour. [Other sources for Syntax, drawn from the picturesque tradition, were probably Le Sage's Gil Blas and Smollett's Peregrine Pickle, as well as Samuel Butler's earlier Hudibras.] For over a century the many editions and numerous imitations of the Tour attested to the popularity of Combe's humorous hero." (ODNB) "Combe's first Dr. Syntax book (originally published in the Poetical Magazine in 1809) and its successors . . . satirize the many 18th- and early 19th-century writers whose "Tours," "Travels," and "Journeys" were vehicles for sententious moralizing, uninspired raptures, and sentimental accounts of amorous adventures. The popularity of Combe's work owed much to the illustrations of Thomas Rowlandson." (Britannica) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. Añadir al carritoFull Calf. Condición: Very Good Plus. Thomas Rowlandson Ilustrador. Ninth Edition. An attractively bound full calf set of one of Rowlandson's most quintessential works, and easily his most popular into the twentieth century. 8vo. 25 by 16 cm. 81 hand-colored plates. All volumes with title leaves and a leaf with the list of plates contained therein. First and third volumes with two title leaves, one with a hand-colored illustration. (Second volume missing the primary title leaf -- the one with the vignette, as always the case with the ninth edition.) After each List of Plates begins the pagination of the three volumes, which is 272, 277 and 279 pp. Stamped in small print on otherwise blank preliminary is the name of Charles E. Lauriat Co. of Boston. The company was a highly successful bookstore chain that finally went under in the 1990s. We think it likely that the company was responsible for the binding, but we can not assert this with certainty. We also can't date the binding with any sort of precision but it is our sense that it is probably early 20th century. All volumes with two pasted ownership bookplates, one, an attractive armorial bookplate. The bindings have minor rub spots on their joints and along their edges. Early leaves in first volume have a fair amount of foxing, after which, there is negligible foxing in the remainder of that volume and the others. The set is mostly clean. The title leaves are more browned or age toned than one might want, but we have not seen a ninth edition without this issue. Generally the leaves retain a freshness.

The Tours follow the amusing misadventures of the titular character, a foolish clergyman and schoolmaster, and satirize contemporary travel writing. Volume First, iv + [ii] + 276 pp.; Volume Second, [vi] + 277 pp.; Volume Third, [vi] + 279 pp. The engraved title of The First Tour states it is the Ninth Edition with new Plates, indicating it is the ninth impression of this volume. Bound in early cloth, gilt, boards with blind stamped borders, enclosing decoration; spines decorated gilt. Top edges gilt. A little wear to extremities, with stain on front board of 1st Tour and occasional scattered foxing; otherwise a fine set. Binder's label of Remnant and Edmonds London. Early inscriptions on first free endpapers. Illustrated by 79 hand-coloured aquatint plates, signed by Thomas Rowlandson, including 3 frontispieces, by 2 vignette engraved title pages and by tailpiece vignettes. Originally issued in serial parts in Ackermann's, The Poetical Magazine in 1809 and on completion in book form in 1812; this copy has wide text margins as issued. The character of Dr Syntax, a satire on William Gilpin, a proponent of the concept of the picturesque in his writings, at once became immensely popular, with the public demanding more. Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque is a story in verse of a travelling schoolmaster and was originally entitled The Schoolmaster's Tour and later The First Tour, or Tour to the Lakes. The work was reprinted a number of times during the following decades. The first two editions were so popular that the plates had become very worn. In this third edition, Rowlandson has re-engraved them, giving them a sharp and attractive appearance. This collaboration of illustrator, author, and publisher. A fine early set, splendidly illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson and bound by Remnant and Edmonds. (Abbey 266-67, referring to the original parts. Hardie, English Coloured Books, p.167-70).
