Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Hugo Horiot is in love with wheels and all that cranks or turns. He is obsessed with the otherworldly language of pipes--they run, he imagines, from his family home to the center of the earth. He causes endless trouble at home and hates school. He muses: I dream asleep, I dream awake--but he dreams so hard he shuts out the world with reveries that are not just curious but dangerous and painful too. School is a prison he must escape, his teachers oppressors, and his classmates a band of jolly torturers. This is the portrait of a boy who might happen to suffer from autism, but who is also a beautiful rebel inspired to blaze his own path through childhood to find an enduring sense of personal freedom.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. It was a clear spring day, just a hundred years after the birth of Christ, when Jerry Pierce wandered into the Roman Colosseum to spend a quiet afternoon watching gladiators fight to the death. Sixty men had been killed already, not including the 15 condemned criminals executed at lunchtime, when an explosion rocked the arena. Bodies flew from the broad terrace just above the arena where the emperor had been presiding over the event. Shrapnel sliced through an enormous awning that shaded the seats, and a cloud of oily black smoke rose above the crowd. It was clear to Pierce--a traveler from the 21st century--that the explosion had probably been caused by an antitank missile. Emperor Domitian was dead, and Pierce was ordered to investigate the assassination for the Agency of Intertemporal Development--an assignment that would pit him against the best of Rome's gladiators.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Drawing both on historical accounts of the emotions and on contemporary affect theory, this book explores the intersection of social constructions of sex and gender with the development of norms for emotive speech in literary texts from the classical to the early modern periods. More specifically, the book argues that the influential Stoic theory of the prepassions (as distinct from the passions proper) resonates richly with recent work on affect, emphasizing in similar ways the role of embodied feelings that may exceed available linguistic norms as well as challenging gendered emotion scripts. From the tragic Stoicism of Virgil's>Aeneid to Chaucer's Stoic-Petrarchan Griselda and the Stoic-inflected attitudes reflected in the work of seventeenth century poet Mary Carey, the Stoic view of the emotions as test-cases for a moralized conception of masculine coherence conflicts with a fluid affective model of feeling that challenges the ideal of emotional self-containment.Marion A. Wells>is Henry N. Hudson Professor of English at Middlebury College, USA. Her previous publications include>The Secret Wound: Love Melancholy and Early Modern Romance>(Stanford UP, 2007).…

Hardback. Condición: Good. The court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf I produced nothing more amazing than the Mira colligrophioe monumenta, a flamboyant demonstration of two arts-calligraphy and miniature painting. The project began when Rudolf's predecessor commissioned the master calligrapher Georg Bocskay to create a model book of calligraphy. A preeminent scribe, Bocskay assembled a vast selection of contemporary and historic scripts. Many were intended not for practical use but for virtuosic display. Years later, at Rudolf's behest, court artist Joris Hoefnagel filled the spaces on each manuscript page with images of fruit, flowers, insects, and other natural minutiae. The combination of word and images is rare and, on its tiny scale, constitutes one of the marvels of the Central European Renaissance. The manuscript is now in the collections of the Getty Museum. Forty-eight of its pages are reproduced in this book, containing samples of classic italic hands; historical, invented, and exhibition hands; Rotunda, a classicizing humanist script based on Carolingian miniscule; classically based scripts; and Gothic blackletter and chancery.…
