A 19th-century industrialist, Slater amassed significant wealth through his success in the cotton industry. Despite his financial accomplishments, Slater is best known for his profound philanthropic efforts. At the time of his death, Slater left behind a sizable fortune, nearly all of which was bequeathed to establish a fund dedicated to improving the lives of freed slaves in the post-Civil War South. Specifically, he directed that the fund be used to provide educational opportunities for African Americans. This book is written from the perspective of Slater's contemporaries and close associates who knew him best. It traces his upbringing in a family with a long history in the cotton trade, his rise to prominence as a businessman, and his impactful work as a philanthropist. The author explores the motivations behind Slater's generosity, highlighting his deep Christian faith and his belief in the importance of education as a means of social and economic empowerment. This book sheds light on the life of a remarkable individual whose legacy continues to shape educational opportunities for marginalized communities today.
