The embedded systems world has a great deal of experience with parallel and distributed computing. Many embedded computing systems require the high performance that can be delivered by parallel computing. Parallel and distributed computing are often the only ways to deliver adequate real time performance at low power levels. This year's conference attracted 30 submissions, of which 21 were accepted. Prof. Jor g Henkel of the University of Karlsruhe graciously contributed a keynote address on embedded computing and reliability. This workshop is the rst of its kind to be organised by an automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to bring together the experts in the eld of embedded systems development to present state-of-the-art work, and to discuss future strategies for addressing the increasing complexity of embedded control systems. The theme of the workshop is an important focus area for the current and future automotive systems. Embedded Control Systems are growing in complexity with the increased use of electronics and software in high-integrity applications for automotive and aerospace domains. In these domains, they provide for enhanced safety, automation and c- fort. Such embedded control systems are distributed, fault-tolerant, real-time systems with hybrid (discrete and continuous) behaviour. Furthermore, many of the control functions, such as by-wire controls, have stringent performance and high-integrity requirements. The research community has been addressing these challenges, and over the last few years, several design methodologies and tools for developing distributed emb- ded control systems have emerged. In spite of these, development of embedded c- trol applications remains a daunting task, requiring a great degree of human skill, expertise, time, and effort. It is imperative to invest signi cant R&D effort in coming up with methods and tools for future embedded control applications.

To support the requirements of a broad spectrum of application domains, publish/subscribe middleware for event-based distributed systems typically provides many policies that affect end-to-end system quality of service (QoS) properties. While tunable policies provide fine-grained control of system QoS, configuring and managing QoS has become more complex as QoS support for pub/sub middleware platforms has increased. This work focuses on the following four synergistic areas: (1) a model-driven technique for developing QoS configurations and applicable implementation artifacts; (2) composite QoS metrics to quantitatively evaluate multiple QoS concerns, (3) a technique for evaluating QoS mechanisms in specific operating environments and providing guidance for QoS configurations; and (4) a technique to support autonomic configuration and adaptation of QoS-enabled pub/sub middleware in flexible and dynamic environments.
