In quest'orizzonte, l'ingegnere francese Fernand de Dartein (1838-1912) redigeva l'Étude sur l'architecture lombarde et sur les origines de l'architecture romano-byzantine, prima e colossale indagine sul romanico in Lombardia, e svolgeva i suoi sopralluoghi alla basilica, documentati da schizzi, disegni e planches acquerellate preparatorie alle incisioni. A cent'anni dalla morte dello studioso francese, questa ricerca ne ricostruisce l'indagine e riesamina alcune questioni problematiche, cronologiche e strutturali, riconsiderando come la basilica di Sant'Ambrogio nell'Ottocento abbia avuto nuova vita e sia diventata la basilica che oggi conosciamo. Dartein ha dedicato più di venti anni (almeno dal 1860 al 1882) alla realizzazione del suo progetto, fecondo punto d'incontro (e di confronto) tra i maggiori protagonisti della cultura europea del suo tempo.
