As perhaps some of your may perceive my recent listings of books of poetry though enjoyable for me are often clearly over my head. Thank goodness for Wikipedia who kindly supplied me with an ample article about the author of this book I am about to list-to wit (and with my thanks and occasional donation to Wikipedia): Sara Bard Field (September 1, 1882 June 15, 1974) was an American poet, suffragist, free love advocate, Georgist, and Christian socialist. She worked on successful campaigns for women's suffrage in Oregon and Nevada. Working with Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, Field drove across the country from California to Washington, D.C., to present a petition containing a reported 500,000 signatures demanding a federal suffrage amendment to President Woodrow Wilson. She was known as a skilled orator and became a poet later in her career, marrying her long-time partner and mentor, poet and lawyer C.E.S. Wood. Please find her book: Darkling Plain . This book a new collection of poems was published by Random House of New York dated 1936 and the First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. The book measures 6 ¼ x 9 inches and includes 93 pages and was printed at the Grabhorn Press of San Francisco. The book is bound in burnt orange cloth with gilt titles on cover and spine and protected by a printed paper dust jacket with charming silver speckles inside and out. The book opens with a four-page Note to Fellow Marxists ; please see the photos of the Table of Contents for your further information. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket is a bit darkened from normal handling particularly along the spine. It also shows some very minor edge wear. The hard covers are clean and unbumped with a narrow band of lightened cloth along the spine and top edge. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright and devoid of toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound.

The second collection of poems by Sara Bard Field (1882-1974), an American poet, suffragist, Georgist, and Christian socialist. She was married to Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944), an American author, artist, Georgist, lawyer, and civil liberties advocate. Field and Wood lived in an estate called "The Cats" or "The Cats Estate" in Los Gatos, which saw many famous guests including Charlie Chaplin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Wood was also friends with notable figures such as Ansel Adams, Chief Joseph, Margaret Sanger, and John Steinbeck. The following is Wood's inscription on the front free endpaper: "To Alberta Wright Gerould, With all sincere wishes for her happiness, and that of her young husband as they walk together on this 'darkling plain,' from Sara Bard Field. 'The Cats,' Los Gatos, Calif., Dec, 1942." Calling card has the following printed text on white paper: "Colonel and Mrs. Charles Erskine Scott Wood." Wood has written the following letter on this calling card, front and back, in black ink: "Dear Alberta, We send you and your husband our loving congratulations and our hope that your union will be as happy as ours--and as growthful. Your father thought you'd best like some of our books as a wedding gift. Alas! Dear Col. Wood is almost blind and hence his uncertain autograph written with pain, but in sincere regard. Had he had good sight, he would have written more. Bless you, dear Alberta! Sara Bard Field.".
