Condición: Used. Welcome to the charming and utterly bewildering world of "The Dad And Dave Stories" by Steele Rudd, a tome that promises to whisk you back to an era when the biggest societal crisis was whether to boil the kettle for tea or just wave a biscuit at it. Published in 1981 by Angus & Robertson, this delightful collection of tales is the literary equivalent of a well-loved cardigan?slightly frayed at the edges but imbued with the kind of warmth that only comes from years of experience and the occasional spill of something unidentifiable. As you crack open this book, prepare yourself for a delightful mix of dry wit and rural absurdity that seems to have been plucked straight from the whimsical annals of Australian life. Steele Rudd, a man whose name sounds like a character from a forgotten sitcom, invites you to meet Dad and Dave, two quintessentially Australian blokes whose escapades are as bewildering as they are relatable. Think of them as the quintessential buddies who would rather debate the merits of a good meat pie than engage in any sort of profound existential crisis?which, let?s be honest, seems like a much safer option, particularly when there?s a chance that the local pub is serving dinner. In this collection, you?ll discover tales that meander through the fields of rural Australia, with plotlines that seem to wander as much as the characters themselves. Dad, the archetype of wholesome parenting and questionable wisdom, and Dave, his trusty sidekick, tackle life?s challenges with the kind of logic that only makes sense if you?ve spent too many hours pondering the nature of toast. One can only speculate whether Steele Rudd wrote these stories during a long night of camping or perhaps while attempting to coax a cow into giving milk?either scenario feels equally plausible. While each story stands alone like a quirky statue in a park of oddities, together they form a mosaic of hilarity and mishap. If you?ve ever found yourself in a situation where you thought, ?How on Earth did I get here??, you?ll undoubtedly resonate with the misadventures of these characters. You might even find yourself wondering if perhaps they?re not so different from your own family, minus the accents and possibly the facial hair. But let?s not forget the absurdity that wraps around these narratives like a snug blanket on a chilly Australian evening. Steele Rudd?s storytelling is peppered with the kind of irony that makes you chuckle even as you shake your head in disbelief. Here, the mundane becomes magnificent, and the ridiculous transforms into a riotous romp that leaves you both entertained and mildly confused?much like family gatherings during the holidays. As you traverse through the whimsical tales of Dad and Dave, you may find yourself mulling over the complexities of life, love, and whether it?s acceptable to wear socks with sandals. The book doesn?t promise enlightenment, but it does offer a peculiar comfort that can only be derived from shared absurdities and the realization that life is, indeed, full of hilarious mishaps. Condition: As you meander through the pages of this used copy, you may notice the charming signs of age, such as a slightly dog-eared corner here and a mysterious coffee stain there, each adding character and authenticity to this literary adventure. The pages are yellowed a touch, reminiscent of those family photo albums that throw you into a nostalgia-induced spiral. You might even find a few handwritten notes in the margins?perhaps someone else?s attempts to solve the mysteries of Dad and Dave or just random musings on the best way to brew tea. Either way, it?s part of the journey. So, if you find yourself in need of a good chuckle or simply want to escape into a world where the primary concerns revolve around biscuits and the occasional sheep, "The Dad And Dave Stories" is waiting for you. Snatch it up from Crappy Old Books, and let the absurdity commence?you won?t regret it, and if you do, well, at least you?ll have a good story about that too. …

Hardback. Steele Rudd, J.M. Dent Pty. Limited, Melbourne. Condition remarks:Book: Good Jacket: Very goodPages: Good Markings: No markingsA beloved classic of Australian rural literature, A Dad and Dave Selection chronicles the hilariously chaotic lives of the Rudd family as they struggle to carve out a living on a Queensland selection - a small, government-granted farming plot - in the late nineteenth century. With sharp wit and warm affection, the stories present the bumbling yet endearing patriarch Dad and his son Dave as they battle drought, debt, and the unforgiving bush in a series of comedic misadventures. The tone is distinctly humorous yet grounded in the harsh realities of pioneer life, illustrating both the absurdity and the resilience of the Australian battler spirit. These sketches, drawn from Steele Rudd's celebrated On Our Selection series, gave birth to two of the most iconic characters in Australian literary history, whose names became synonymous with the larrikin humour and stoic determination of the bush. A cornerstone of Australian folklore, this collection remains an essential and thoroughly entertaining read for anyone interested in the nation's cultural and literary heritage. Hardback.…
