Arnold James Cooley (1816-1881) was a British chemist and author, the son of William Cooley, a Navy surgeon, and his wife Matilda, nee Noyes. He was married twice, first to Mary Ann Wills in 1845 and later to Mary Scott in 1866. He was the father of no less than nine children. He authored several books, including A Cyclopaedia of Six Thousand Practical Receipts and Two Months in a London Hospital - the latter following an accident when Arnold had been run over by a horse drawn omnibus in London. Cooley spent time in New York while his books were being published here. He died at No.1 Upper Chadwell St., Clerkenwell, London, at the age of 64 years and was buried at St Pancras with Islington Cemetery, Middlesex.
