Als Grenzgänger der Aufklärung gehört Dulaurens zu den geheimnisumwittertsten und skandalträchtigsten Autoren der Literaturgeschichte: Aufgrund seiner radikal antiklerikalen, nicht selten auch erotisch-pornografischen Schriften wurde er von seinen Gegnern des Deismus oder Atheismus sowie der Unmoral und Obszönität bezichtigt. Seine Schriften wurden allesamt heimlich und unter vielfältigen Pseudonymen gedruckt. Sie wurden sogleich nach ihrem Erscheinen verfolgt.
