Pagine 52, ill. -- La Colonna Santa in San Pietro, che qui viene illustrata, ha avuto funzione di sostegno, è stata oggetto di devozione, strumento penitenziale redentivo per indemoniati, e infine reperto prezioso da museo. Per questi diversi usi, differenziati nel tempo, ha quindi subito notevoli spostamenti di luogo, conservando però la sacralità implicita nella sua stessa conformazione. Molteplice infatti è la simbologia che può trovare spazio in una colonna. Famose sono nella letteratura classica le Colonne d'Ercole, poste come limite estremo e invalicabile del mondo conosciuto. Ad esse si ispirò l'imperatore spagnolo Carlo V per simboleggiare che il suo impero era universale in quanto si estendeva sino ai confini della terra. La simbologia dei fregi della Colonna Santa della basilica vaticana che nella sua forma vitinea rappresenta nei tralci della vite il rapporto che lega il credente a Cristo nelle foglie d'edera la vita eterna si articola anche in figure pagane per esprimere concetti cristiani: la lucertola simbolo dell'anima che tende alla luce; gli eroti o amorini, che fino al IV secolo furono la prefigurazione degli angeli, simboli dell'iniziazione del neofita; le foglie di acanto che fino al medioevo furono simbolo della risurrezione. Nella cancellata di protezione che nel XV secolo venne posta a tutela della Colonna Santa fu collocata una iscrizione che illustrava la ragione della devozione di cui per secoli essa fu oggetto, affermando che Gesù si appoggiava ad essa stando in piedi, quando predicava e pregava. Altri interessanti particolari, legati alla sua storia nella basilica vaticana e che qui vengono descritti, sono venuti alla luce durante il restauro conservativo recentemente effettuato.

La gran parte delle fotografie qui riprodotte è stata eseguita dall'autore ed ha costituito l'angolo visuale, oltre che l'iniziale strumento del suo lavoro; perciò, tra le parole e le immagini del presente saggio, esiste un legame di reciprocità che nella storiografia dell'architettura può dirsi inconsueto.
