Samuel Clarke (1675-1729) was the most influential British metaphysician and philosophical theologian in the generation between Locke and Berkeley, and only Shaftesbury rivals him in ethics. In all three areas he was critical of Hobbes, Spinoza, and Toland. Clarke defended natural religion against the view that nature constitutes a self-sufficient system, and he defended revealed religion against deism. A wide-margined copy, interleaved with blanks. Priced in ink throughout, with buyers' names given in Part One. A truly astonishing collection, comprised of 4,552 lots (some are portfolios of prints); the breadth of artists represented is wide, and includes Hollar, Faithorne, Delaram, Elstracke, Strange, Woollett, Morghen, Baldini, Botticelli, Mantegna, Vertue, Reynolds, Loggan, Bartolozzi, Blootelling, among others. Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823) was an MP, but more interestingly, was a founding member of the Roxburghe Club and a prominent bibliophile whose library of nearly 3,700 volumes was dispersed at auction the year before in 1823 in three sales. While an advertisement by Mr. Sotheby in Part Three of the present volume lists a forthcoming "Part VI," covering topographical prints connected with the County of York, the title page to Part the Fifth states it is the "Fifth and Last Part," and its summary description of the offerings includes the aforementioned York topographical items. A scarce set of all five parts. An attractive copy, with the pages quite well preserved; some minor rubbing to covers; small corner dampstains to a couple of leaves.

The route by land & sea from Nagasaki to Tokyo is marked. On stylistic grounds the map has been attributed to the engraver Herman Moll, making it one of his earliest works. Laid in is a printed open letter from Ponton d'Amécourt to M. Nadar [i.e., Gaspard Félix Tournachon (1820-1910)]; 4pp.; Trilport, 12 January 1864 (soiled, edges frayed, a few tears along center fold). First Edition. In 1863, after the failure of the 6000 cubic-meter balloon Le Géant, Jules Verne, aerial photographer Félix Tournachon (known by his nickname "Nadar"), and engineers Ponton d'Amécourt and Gabriel de la Landelle formed the "Society for the Encouragement of Aerial Locomotion by Means of Heavier-than-Air Machines." In that same year Ponton d'Amécourt constructed a model helicopter with counter-rotating propellers and a steam engine, using "what was then a new material, aluminum . . . The steam engine drove two rotors, each of two blades, mounted one above the other. While this model did not fly successfully, the inventor exhibited and patented the idea in both France and England" (Boyne, How the Helicopter Changed Modern Warfare [2011], p. 304). Ponton d'Amécourt coined the term "helicopter" to describe his new machine, forming the term from the Greek words "helicoeioas" (spiral) and "pteron" (wing). The machine is described in his "La conquète de l'air par l'hélice," which appears on pp. 1-18 of the Collection. This collection contains the six parts of the "Collection of memoirs on aerial locomotion without balloons" edited by Ponton d'Amécourt, together with a separate offprint of Gerardin's "Études sur les moteurs," which appeared in the sixth part of the Collection. Also included is a printed letter from Ponton d'Amécourt to Nadar Tournachon regarding the formation of the Heavier-than-Air Society. .
