Mittelholzer (1909-1965) called the experimental style of Latticed Echoes the "Leitmotiv technique", taking inspiration from Wagner. Born in British Guiana, Mittelholzer is considered the first professional Caribbean novelist to publish in English. He moved to London in 1947 and met Leonard Woolf, who published his A Morning At The Office (1950) at the Hogarth Press. The set includes one of his greatest achievements, the Kaywana trilogy.
