"Poor Edward the Fifth was young killed in his bed" "By his uncle, Richard, who was knocked on the head" "By Henry the Seventh, who in fame grew big" "And Henry the Eighth, who was fat as a pig " By the time "Mr. Collins" had written this verse, George III, the King of England, had been noticeably missing for seven years—having spent much of the time in his final period of illness at Windsor Castle—and the country had forever lost its American colonies. For many English citizens this dismal period was considered to be the beginning of the end for the British monarchy." The Chapter of Kings," offered here in a facsimile edition, provides a good deal of illustration to that effect. For the first time since 1818, these charming verses, which were written for children but remain a biting satire ofthe British monarchy, are available for our edification and amusement, each accompanied by hand-drawn "portraits" of England's kings, from Caesar through George, the prince and future king. Written and illustrated with a keen sense of irony, "The Chapter of Kings" is a fascinating peek, both for children and parents, into nineteenth-century attitudes toward the royals. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Poor. 1st Edition. Coloured title page and 37 hand-coloured illustrations (this was also issued without hand-colouring in a plain edition), each having text above and below. Text and illustrations engraved on one side of paper only. The lines at the bottom of each page are a rhyming summary of the kings of England and a brief account of highlights of the ruler's reign. The final two leaves missing but supplied in colour reproduction. All leaves showing cumulated patina from use, with noticeable thumbing, creasing, rubbing, browning and staining. This is an early issue, with the title-page giving the 1818 date of the first edition and the watermarks most probably reading 1822 (see page 16, although truncated by page placement). Later endpapers. 11 x 13.5 cm. New sympathetic quarter red roan over original printed boards. Spine has gold fillets in gilt & title "Kings". Engraving of the J. Harris shop, Juvenile Library, to the upper, board and note on the rear cover: "Parents and Teachers must have remarked the difficulty Children experience in recollecting the Succession of the English Monarchs, and likewise how much the memory is assited by rhyme" seriously rubbed, worn and torn at edges rendering it illegible. This entertaining small book contains short snippets of information about the reigns, or fateful feats, of English monarchs from Edward Ironside to George IV (here as Prince of Wales) & veers from savage satire to idealized adoration, offering a refreshingly irreverent overview of British rulers. Moon points out that it was re-issued many times without change of date, but on later watermarked paper. Moon, John Harris's Books for Youth, 151; Osborne Collection, p. 162; Opie D 37 (this issue not given in their sequences). WorldCat locates nine copies in the UK.

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. in the original red quarter roan over printed boards with gilt lettering and decoration on spine, bookseller?s label on front pastedown, corners lightly bumped, and head and tail of spine chipped, general wear-and-tear to boards, otherwise good. 12mo in sixes (110 x 135 mm), engraved title page and pp. 37, each engraved on one side only and bound with the two engraved sides to face each other, with black and white illustrations and text, alternate openings therefore blank, An entertaining and scarce educational book for children on the monarchs of Britain, from King Alfred to George IV. Text and illustrations are engraved on one side of the paper only. Each engraved monarch has two or three lines of explanatory text above and beneath the engraving is a line taken from a ballad first published in Collins? Scripscrapologia, Birmingham, 1804, beginning ?The Romans, in England, they once did sway / And the Saxons, they after them, led the way? The ballad offers an amusing view of English history, giving a rhyming summary of each king or queen running through the book, such as ?Henry the Eighth who was fat as a pig? or ?Poor Edward the Fifth, was young killed in his bed/ By his uncle, Richard, who was knocked on the head? The engravings are lovely, too, with ?great attention paid to the correctness of the Costume and Design? As the book reaches the present, the final King is George III and (Regent Prince George) who escapes mockery, as he does not make a comment about George III?s madness, only remarking, ?Long life to the George that we have in his stead? Collins may be satirical about previous monarchs, but he is certain to be polite and respectful about the present monarchy, teaching his child readers respect and reverence alongside an understanding of their history. Additionally, as a teaching aid, Collins recommends the importance of verse and particularly of rhyme in aiding memory, as noted on the rear printed board: ?Parents and Teachers must have remarked the difficulty Children experience in recollecting the Succession of the English Monarchs, and likewise how much the memory is assisted by rhyme.? Osborne Collection I, p. 162.
