Sidney Shapiro aka Shabo Li or Sha Bo Li, was a Brooklyn Jew who in 1947 moved to China & was responsible for some of the most important Chinese-English translation work of the past 50 years, including some of the first work to come out of New China. Shapiro was one of only a handful of Westerners to be granted citizenship by the PRC; and the man who faced down death as a Western intellectual working in the thick of the Cultural Revolution.
