Het standpunt van Vekemans ter zake blijkt duidelijk uit wat hij al decennialang maakt. Het intellectuele discours doet er voor hem niet toe. Het kunstwerk is autonoom, het is goed of het is het niet, het moet maar voor zich spreken. Het is een vreemde vaststelling: zowel door de keuze van zijn onderwerpen als door zijn werkwijze creeert Vekemans bewust een afstand tussen werk en toeschouwer. Waar andere kunstenaars alles uit de kast halen om de toeschouwer deelgenoot te maken van hun eigen emotie, daar trekt Vekemans als het ware een barriere op. Emotieloos kun je zijn kunst niet noemen, maar felle gevoelens ontbreken geheel. Dit is een gedreven, maar niet een getormenteerd kunstenaar. Ook in zijn landschappen heerst een aparte sfeer. Ook die ademen een sfeer van verlatenheid, en ze zijn van een niet-klassieke, desolate schoonheid. Woont of leeft hier iemand? Stilte alom. Vekemans verliest zich niet in het detail. Schrijven is schrappen, luidt het adagium, en schilderen is weglaten. Hij is een meesterlijk weglater. En zo wordt de toeschouwer toch in het stuk betrokken.
