Clean, square covers and spine; rubbed at spine ends - light fraying; very slightly faded on spines - all titles clear; slight fading at cover edges; both vols have few light scrapes or insect grazes near edges; volume 2 is sharply bumped at top fore corner causing some wrinkles in cover; tightly bound; very clean interiors - many leave unopened at fore edges; slight age darkening at page edges - leaves remain supple. Contemporary half green calf, red marbled boards heightened in gilt, five raised bands with gilt-tooled panel decoration to backstrip, red and black morocco label strips with title information in gilt to backstrip, marbled endpapers. Joints and corners of boards have some slight rubbing, minor foxing to outer margins; otherwise very good. Bookplate of Thomas Lee Marshall to first pastedown. § First edition thus, with a "Life of Swift" by Rev. John Mitford. The Aldine Poet Series was a 20 year project that involved printing new editions of classic British poets from Chaucer through to the 19th Century. They were published in 53 volumes during the years 1830-1844. Pickering secured John Mitford and Alexander Dyce as editors with Sir Harris Nicolas, so that the series would be of a high standard.

Complete in fifty-three volumes, 8vo, Chaucer in six volumes, Dryden and Spenser in five, Burns, Churchill, Cowper, Milton, Pope and Swift in three and Butler, Prior, Thomson and Young in two. Portrait frontispieces of all the poets except Falconer, as published, some light foxing, armorial bookplates of Philip Stapleton Humberston in all but the Spenser volumes, Pickering's small bookseller's label to the paste downs of 22 volumes. Original full morocco in various colours, a.e.g., the Spenser volumes with some wear to the joints and spine ends, otherwise a very good set.
