Bound in half green morocco over marbled paper covered boards in good+ condition with a li…ttle rubbing to side of spine and edges. Inside a faint aroma of smoke, otherwise all pages in clean and bright condition with the very occasional spot of foxing. This publication was called "the Bookbinder" from 1887-1890, (the first 3 volumes), with this first edition the first to become "The British Bookmaker" in 1891. A very nice copy.

A holograph note laid down on the front pastedown of the earliest volume reads: Forwarded, marbled and finished by H A Hughes foreman bookbinder. with Wm Dresser & Sons Darlington 1889-1906. Volume VI of this journal devoted to the craft and history of book binding, published in1893 and containing numerous plates, text illustrations, cloth binders specimen plates, advertisements etc. Edited by Robert Hilton, The British Bookmaker was published from 1891-1894 before being absorbed into The Briti…sh Printer. This volume was owned by the Yorkshire bookbinder Martin E Thorpe who trained at Leeds College of Technology in the 1950s and founded the binders Etherington Thorpe & Co. Ltd. The book has been recently rebound in half black morocco over pebbled cloth, red spine label with gilt lettering, raised bands, green marbled endpapers, marbled edges to the text block. Vol VI vi, pp288, near fine, just a little spotting to the original end papers. Ownership inscription of Ernest Hutchings to title page. A fascinating and elegant volume.
