Alexander Cruden (1701-70) was a bookseller and editor; in 1735 he was made bookseller to the Queen. The first edition of his Concordance was published in 1737, the third edition of 1769 was dedicated to the King. The present edition contains the author's prefaces to earlier editions, and a history of Concordances from the first compiled, by the Dominican Friar, Hugo de S. Charo (d.1262). The life of the author is entertainingly frank. Cruden's Concordance is still published. Generally well preserved, front cover detached, occasional faint foxing. Ownership signature on title-page, 'Andrew Lawson 1822'; notes inside front and back cover. (extra postage due to weight).

Elegantly bound in contemporary brown full polished calf with gilt-lettered red morocco title label, raised bands and gilt centre ornament to spine. Bookplate of Earn Cornwallis to pastedown, contents clean and fresh, binding pleasingly aged with light rubbing and handling only. A near fine copy. Charles Cornwallis, 2nd Earl Cornwallis (1738-1805) (created Marquess Cornwallis in 1792), was an Eton and Cambridge-educated British soldier and noted military commander, best known as one of the leading British generals in the American War of Independence; his surrender to George Washington's Franco-American army at Yorktown effectively ended the war.

He took his degrees in arts at Trinity College, Oxford in 1625. In 1632 he completed his degrees and was ordained. In 1649 he was presented to the rectory of Wrington in Somersetshire by his patron Arthur lord Capel, son of the beheaded lord Capel. Later, he became minister of St. Augustine, Watling-street.

They explain their understanding of Devine wisdom as inspiration and truth, both in the life and time of Jesus and in their own day. The French edition was published in Amsterdam in 1718, translated and annotated by Isaac de Beausobre and Jacques Lentfant. I. de Beausobre (16591738), a French Protestant, migrated to Berlin in 1694, where he became chaplain to the King of Prussia, and counsellor of the royal Consistory. J. Lenfant (16611728) was pastor of the French Protestant church at Berlin and chaplain to the King (DM 3808). Beausobre was best known for his history of Manichaeism and Lenfant for his many works on church history. According to Thoams Thornton this edition distinguishes itself from other early translations of the Luther Bible in that it marks the supplementary words with considerable care. The english translation was done by Jeremiah Batley and Nonconformist minister Samuel Chandler (Steven DeRose, List of English Bible Versions, Translations, and Paraphrases). Our copy is complete with only St. Matthews being published in English (Herbert 980). Binding with front cover detached but present, back joint cracked but firm with small chips at head and tail of spine; wear along edges and rubbed. Few inked words on inside cover and detached front free endpaper, foxed. Library stamp across title page. Back endpapers foxed and starting at inside back cover. Some age toning of block. Binding in overall poor to fair, interior in good+ condition.
