The title page reads "Bibeln eller den heliga skrift innehallande gamla och nya testamentets kanoniska bocker ofversattning af kongl bibelkommissionen". It looks like the final blank leaf was torn out, but it appears all the text is intact. The final text page does have a tear and a small hole, affecting a bit of the text (see picture - the missing bit of the page is stuck to the inside of the rear cover). The first leaf has a 1" tear at the bottom, as well as a gift inscription in Swedish (apparently the Bible was given on the recipient's confirmation day, September 13, 1891) with a list of verses and two names, presumably the giver and receiver. That this book ended up in the U.S. implies it was brought here by a Swedish immigrant. The covers are well worn, with wear everywhere at all edges, and the top 1" of the front and rear hinges are starting to separate. The top 1/8" of the spine has worn away, but the book is still solidly held together, if a bit fragile. (58743).

Bound in quarter brown Morocco with gilt spine and gilt title on the front cover. All edges of the book block are gilt. The binding is well preserved, but there are areas of rubbing and wear to the extremities. A small area on the spine tail cap is carefully repaired. Endpapers show age-toning and scattered foxing; two names are penciled on the front free endpaper; the rear free endpaper is chipped on the outer edge and contains a 1.5 cm tear. Interior pages are fresh but with faint toning mostly towards the extremities and margins. Title page displays a mild uniform toning. Minor marginal tears are present on several leaves. The fold-our map shows marginal edge wear/chipping. Note: four leaves (5 pages) for recording births, marriages and deaths follow p. 1159. Manuscript entries in this section are in several hands apparently of the 19th to early 20th century with family names such as Yale, Hitchcock, Predmore and Rockwell recorded. The earliest date (under births) being 1824 and the latest date (under deaths) being 1933.
