Apart from being an anthology for pleasure, this selection is carefully chosen to give a broad picture of Dickens the man. The less familiary pieces ate especially stimulating in this respect. There are, for example, private letters from Dickens to his wife and friends, and notes from his diaries, that provide delightful glimpses of the author, his witty, often cutting, reflections on the foibles of others, and his extraordinary powers of observation. The accounts of his travels in Europe and America are both vivid and revealing, and there is a marvellous funny account of a disastrous family production of Shakespeare. The passions and humanity of the man are here in broad canvas. This is an ideal book for both the earnest and the casual reader, and there is enough variety in the selection to appeal to every taste.389 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
