Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The battle of Pavia in 1525, in which Francis 1, King of France, was defeated and captured, had tremendous impact throughout Europe; it has been described as "marking the end of the Middle Ages". The contemporary panel painting which formed part of the foundation collection of the Ashmolean Museum in 1683 is one of the most dramatic and detailed images of Renaissance warfare. This book tells the story of the battle and of the making of this famous painting. This is the third title to appear in a uniform series of booklets illustrating and discussing major paintings in the Ashmolean's collections. The painting, which includes numerous foot-soldiers and horsemen representing phases of the imperial assaults on the French besiegers shows a view of the city from the north giving a detailed, visual account, in a compressed synopsis, of the main recorded events of the Battle. Groups and individuals are identified with numbered labels or by their heraldic banners. 'The Battle of Pavia' includes notes by the conservator who has worked on the picture and a chapter by Timothy Wilson on the heraldry depicted by the artist. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Five centuries have passed since the famed Battle of Pavia, one of the most significant battles in history. This clash marked the culmination of the so-called 'Italian Wars', which raged between European states for nearly 40 years across Italy. At Pavia, the dominance of heavy cavalry on the battlefield succumbed to professional infantry. The lanzichenecchi pikemen vanquished their Swiss adversaries and massacred the Germans of the black band in the pay of the French. However, the credit for the victory belongs to the Spanish arquebusiers, expertly commanded by the Marquis of Pescara. The fire from their weapons obliterated the elite of the French gendarmerie, contributing to the capture of King Francois. The Battle of Pavia 1525 is Massimo Predonzani's second book on the battle. It not only updates the previous work but also completes it with a detailed description of the siege of the city, utilising the writings of chroniclers who were present during the siege. For the battle, however, the analysis of the Capodimonte tapestries was vital, as they provide the most accurate iconographies of the historical event. Their images were compared with the accounts of contemporary Italian, Spanish, German, and French chroniclers, as well as with the reports of individuals who participated in the siege and the battle. Through this comparison, Predonzani identified the individuals depicted in the tapestries and their heraldry. The text is accompanied by well-researched colour plates, images, photographs, and campaign maps. AUTHOR: Massimo Predonzani was born in Piran (Slovenia) in 1959 and currently lives in Trieste (Italy). He is an illustrator and researcher. He is specialised in military heraldry during the Italian and European Renaissance. He wrote "Anghiari 29 giugno 1440" (2010), printed by "Il Cerchio" (Rimini), "Ceresole 14 aprile 1544" (2012) distributed in French and Italian by French publisher "Historic'one". In 2014 he wrote "Caravaggio 1448. L'assedio, le battaglie, l'araldica" published by "Acies Editions" (Milan). His articles "The taking of Pisa based on the painting on the front of a chest preserved in the National Gallery in Dublin," (2013) and "Les drapeaux de Venise pris par les Suisses a la Bataille d'Agnadel et conserves au Musee d' Appenzell" (2015) have been published by the Swiss Journal "Archivum Heraldicum". Since 2006 he has been providing the magazine "Soldatini" with texts and illustrations. He also has a website where he shares his research and his painted illustrations ). 51 b/w illustrations, 16pp colour plates, 6 b/w maps This book, written for the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Pavia, deals with the detailed description of the siege of the city and the clash of 24 February 1525. Everything is supported by the analysis of the Capodimonte tapestries, the most precise iconographies existing on this historical event.
