O'Brien & Company addressed to Mrs. M. E. Brown of Selma, California. A representative from J. J. O'Brien & Co. is replying to Mrs. Brown's previous inquiry. The letter reads, "Madam, We have no Jersey with Colored Vest larger than [measurement specifications], nor could we procure one in the City." The printed header reads, "'The Arcade.' J. J. John Perry Cobb (1855-1886) owned a machine shop in College City. Part of the header describes his business as follows: "Engines, Separators, and all Kinds of Machinery Repaired and Made to Order. Folding Header Beds and Elevator Supports." Cobb was also an inventor and held a number of U.S. patents. In this letter to Root Neilson & Co. (of Sacramento), Cobb writes of a change to some equipment his is making for them, "I have determined to drive the piston with a crank instead of the gear ." Single sheet folded on the printed letterhead of the Royal Asiatic So…ciety of Great Britain and Ireland, written on one side, signed. Old folds, otherwise in very good or better condition. Administrative correspondence from William Sandys Wright Vaux, antiquary, numismatist, Keeper of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, and long-serving Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society. Addressed to the bibliographer and indexer Henry Benjamin Wheatley, the letter grants permission for the annual meeting of the Index Society to be held at the Society's rooms in Albemarle Street, requesting an estimate of attendance so that suitable accommodation and seating may be arranged. The Index Society, founded in 1877, sought to promote the preparation and publication of indexes to historical records, manuscripts and printed works. Wheatley was among its principal officers and later became one of the most influential figures in British bibliography and indexing, remembered particularly for How to Make an Index (1888). An attractive association between two prominent Victorian scholars, linking the Royal Asiatic Society and the early history of the Index Society. Signed by Author(s).

Manby that "Bazalgette and I are both anxious to put our sons together into an engine works for a few months", before asking whether "G. R. Stephenson would let us send them to yours or rather his". The Bazalgette referenced is almost certainly Sir Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891), chief engineer of London's great sewer and embankment works, while G. R. Stephenson is George Robert Stephenson (1819-1905), prominent civil engineer, nephew of George Stephenson and cousin of Robert Stephenson. Very good. Geor…ge Hemans was a pioneering Irish architect and engineer, responsible for the design of major railway schemes in Ireland and the UK, including the line between Dublin and Cork. He was also heavily involved in planning around sewage disposal and works. In this letter, Hemans writes to thank Lt Col. Manby for forwarding his and Sir Joseph Bazalgette's request concerning placements for their sons, noting that both are ready to go "the moment permission is given" and are aware they "must work and make the most of the excellent opportunity so liberally granted to them". He adds that he has spoken personally with (George Robert) Stephenson, who agrees provided arrangements can be made. A rare piece of Victorian engineering correspondence linking three major names in public works: George Willoughby Hemans, Sir Joseph Bazalgette (responsible for London's modern sewerage system), and George Robert Stephenson about the placement of Heman's and Bazalgette's sons into apprenticeships. Ecclesfield, Feb. 27, 1864. 1 sheet of blue paper, 110 x 190 mm, folded once, written over two pages and signed by Juliana Horatia Gatty. With a folded cream…bifolium of a poem and two ink sketches, inserted and fixed to the rear page. Old folds, mounting residue to the last page, pin hole loss to last page not affecting sketch. The letter by children's writer Juliana Ewing, to Miss Woodall, concerns the commissioning of an engraved seal, specifying onyx or cornelian and giving instructions as to size and shape, referring to an enclosed sketch. The inserted bifolium contains two pen-and-ink drawings with accompanying manuscript verses. The poem is about ladies that lose one of their group, who then springs up out of a box, to their shock and surprise. The drawings illustrate the poem, showing a group gathered around playing croquet and then shocked as the girl pops out of a box. The letter is written by Ewing; the drawings and verse either Ewing or one of her sisters. Signed by Author(s).

His second wife, 1865, was Lady Harriet Elizabeth St Clair Erskine, (d.1867), daughter of the 3rd Earl of Rosslyn.

This is a brief but remarkable overview of the economic conditions of the time in Georgia and… has some comparisons with those of 'the North'. The author was one of at least two sons of H. Sanford. Excerpts from this letter are: "I see you expect to go to Chicago soon.; "I hope when I go back North I shall be able to go that way & visit you." "I am somewhat disappointed with my Father's business here, and as soon as I get it in shape so that he and my Bro. can manage it, I shall look for some other employment for myself, either here or north.;" "The ways of ding business are very different from in the north. The great industry here is cotton. Those engaged in handling that are making money, but they monopolize the whole trade to a great extent." "The city grocery trade is al right, if we can get enough of it, but the country trade is no good here."; and 'Rents are very high here, & I have about concluded a person can live about as chill north, if it is some colder." Also included is one 'business card' with " J. S. Sanford" stamped on one side. Rome is the largest city in and the county seat of Floyd County, Georgia, United States. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it is the principal city of the Rome, Georgia, metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Floyd County. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 36,303. It is the largest city in Northwest Georgia and the 22nd-largest city in the state. Rome was founded in 1834, after Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, and the federal government committed to removing the Cherokee and other Native Americans from the Southeast. It developed on former indigenous territory at the confluence of the Etowah and the Oostanaula rivers, which together form the Coosa River. Because of its strategic advantages, this area was long occupied by the historic Creek. Later the Cherokee people expanded into this area from their traditional homelands to the east and northeast. The city has developed on seven hills with the rivers running between them, a feature that inspired the early European-American settlers to name it for Rome, the longtime capital of Italy that was also built on seven hills. The American Rome developed in the antebellum period as a market and trading city due to its advantageous location on the rivers. It shipped the rich regional cotton commodity crop downriver to markets on the Gulf Coast and export overseas. In May 1864, Union forces under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, attacked and captured Rome when the outflanked Confederate defenders retreated under command of Major General Samuel Gibbs French. Union General William Vandever was stationed in Rome. Due to Rome's forts and iron works, which included the manufacture of cannons, Rome was a significant target during Sherman's march through Georgia to take and destroy Confederate resources. Union forces occupied Rome for several months, making repairs to use the damaged forts and briefly quartering General Sherman. On November 11, 1864, in accordance with Sherman's Special Field Orders, No. 120, Union forces destroyed Rome's forts, iron works, the rail line to Kingston, and any other materiel that could be useful to the South's war effort as they withdrew from Rome to participate in Sherman's March to the Sea. 2 sheets of stationery, written on one side only.
