He was born in Virginia in 1835, served in the Civil War as a chaplain, and in 1860 he married Julia Toy. They had eight children and this autobiographical sketch was written in response to a request from his grandson in 1910.

I'm sure you understand the motive behind the publication. Sincerely, Crawford [Toy Johnson, Jr.]. John Lipscomb Johnson was a Baptist minister who served as a Confederate chaplain. Wounded in July 1861, he became chaplain of an army hospital. After the war he became an English professor at the University of Mississippi.
