The Deaf and Dumb Asylum in Newport, Rhode Island, was established in 1823 as one of the earliest educational institutions for individuals who were deaf or hard of hearing. Originally known as the "Rhode Island Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb," it was founded by philanthropist Henry Barnard and operated under the supervision of the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. The institution provided educational opportunities, vocational training, and support services to deaf individuals, aiming to empower them and integrate them into society. Over time, the institution evolved and expanded its programs to meet the changing needs of the deaf community. Today, it continues to operate as the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, offering a range of educational and support services to students with hearing impairments.
