ItÕs a species of work that has long been very much needed. The vocabulary is proportionately enlarged, so as to contain more than twice the number of words to be found in SchalchÕs. Few annotations also have added with a view to draw the learnerÕs attention to such parts of the grammar of the Arabs as differ that our own language. To give a zest in a work of this kind, in which such a multitude of vowel-points and other orthographical symbols are employed to make justice with the script. The few contractions occasionally used in these notes are sufficiently obvious. The work is very instructive and engaging for the students of Arabic. Though the book is a rare one, it may be recognized even by those who dissent from the AuthorÕs views. About the Author:- Duncan Forbes (1798 Ð 1868) was a Scottish linguist. Forbes was born at Kinnaird, Perthshire and brought up by his grandfather from the age of three after his parents and younger brother emigrated to the United States. Illiterate until 13, he showed no early signs of linguistic ability, but despite this late start, at age 17 he was appointed schoolmaster of the village of Stralock. Shortly after this he attended Kirkmichael School followed by Perth Grammar School and the University of St. Andrews, gaining a master's degree from the latter.
