Edition originale de cette thèse importante et peu courante. Parmi les sujets imposés aux candidats à l'agrégation, celui sur l'aphasie échoua à Alexis Legroux ; c'était le sujet à la fois le plus intéressant et le plus difficile. Alexis Legroux (1839-1894) avait été interne de Broca en 1861 (année où ce dernier identifia le pied de la troisième circonvolution frontale gauche comme étant le centre du langage articulé). Après son internat, il fut chef de clinique de Lasègue (1869-1873) puis devint professeur agrégé de médecine (ayant été reçu à ce concours), médecin en chef à l'hôpital Laennec, professeur suppléant de Bouchard (en 1882) et de Charcot (en 1886). Cette monographie est très documentée (environ 150 références bibliographiques). Legroux rapporte 12 observations, souvent communiquées (par Charcot, Lasègue etc.), certaines inédites, illustrant différents types de lésions et de tableaux cliniques. Cette thèse a été régulièrement citée, de façon élogieuse : "thèse très importante" (Pierre Janet), "excellente thèse" (Billod) etc.…
