A compilation of letters, mainly on flies and fly-dressing, with many references to fishing experiences on the Itchen and Nadder. Includes a preliminary biographical note and linking passages by the editor. George Edward MacKenzie Skues, usually known as G. E. M. Skues (1858-1949), was a British lawyer, author and fly fisherman most noted for the invention of modern-day nymph fishing and the controversy it caused with the Chalk stream dry fly doctrine developed by Frederic M. Halford. His second book, The Way of a Trout with a Fly (1921) is considered a seminal work on nymph fishing. Skues was to fish the Itchen every season until 1938. Until 1917, it was as a guest of his client, Irwin Cox. From 1917 to 1938, he was part of a syndicate with rights to the Barton Abbey fishery. In 1887 he acquired a copy of Frederic M. Halford's Floating Flies and How to Dress Them and that, along with his association with Francis Francis, was when he began his empirical exploration of upstream fishing with both dry flies and nymphs. E. M. Skues is a collection of personal correspondence written by George Edward MacKenzie Skues (1858-1949), a pioneering English fly-fisherman and writer. These letters offer a unique, intimate insight into the development of fly fishing techniques, particularly nymph fishing, which Skues famously championed. The letters reveal Skues as a thoughtful, witty, and meticulous practitioner of the art of fly fishing. His reflections are not just technical but also deeply personal, showing his passion for the river, trout behaviour, and the aesthetics of angling. Skues is best known for challenging the orthodoxy of dry-fly fishing on chalk streams. These letters expand on his observations and experiments with nymphs (subsurface flies), showing how he refined techniques for more successful and subtle trout fishing. The letters often engage in debates with other prominent anglers of the time, especially concerning the ethics and effectiveness of nymph fishing versus dry-fly fishing. Skues defends his methods with evidence and sharp reasoning, adding to the historical importance of the collection. Beyond theoretical discourse, Skues offers detailed advice on casting, presentation, fly patterns, reading water, and understanding fish behaviour. These practical insights remain influential for modern anglers. The correspondence provides a window into early 20th-century British angling culture, especially the traditions of the chalk streams of southern England. The Angling Letters of G. E. M. Skues is a record of intellectual curiosity, innovation, and love for fly fishing. It remains essential reading for anyone interested in the history and art of trout fishing. .…
