Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Jacket by E. J. Pagram Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some edge wear, creasing, chipping, closed tears and small loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, some tiny scratches and chips to front jacket, folds slightly rubbed, but overall jacket largely complete and quite bright. Not price clipped (12s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy for its age. 219pp. A fictional account of a B-24 bomber crew in Europe during World War Two. The pivotal incident in the book is when the crew's aircraft, damaged on a mission and signaling surrender to the enemy by lowering its landing gear breaks a standing agreement by machine gunning their German escorts and destroying their aircraft and killing the pilots. Following this incident, through scenes of mounting tension, the unity of the crew begins to fall apart. Main character Lieutenant Win Helman, navigator, and his crew had already been on more than thirty bombing missions and were the oldest crew operating from their particular base in Italy. Win struggle's to come to terms with himself, as he strives to understand what he has done, and what he personally believes about what he had done. This inner struggle is complicated by the fact that Win is Jewish and has already a feeling of separation from his crew. The scenes of aerial action are blended with Win's developing inner conflict. America author and screen writer Joseph Landon's (1923-87), writing is authoritative and his insights into the stresses faced by World War Two bombing crews are realistic. Quite a scarce and significant book.
